I'm enjoying the new (to me) camera so far - Sony a7s, with the Sony 50mm f/2.5 G lens

This is with the lens wide open and iso 10000, so I won't say that I love this shot technically but I love that Tigress came out of the closet to hang out with me and this is already satisfying my desire to have more camera than my phone (and honestly more digital camera than I ever had before, even if it's a 11 year old design)

I wanted this camera many years ago because it was a full frame sensor and optimized for low light use, and the move to Seattle and an urge to go on walks after dark got me thinking about it again, and it was a lot cheaper now, so I got it

Also feels good to kind of relive something of the experience of a 35mm camera with a 50mm lens which was approximately where I learned to be serious about photography

@recursive

It's got warmth almost like film does, somehow. and how the focus fades but then is sharp again in perimeter. It's a good candid shot. (And adorable moggie)

I have a Canon DSLR for product shoots that I hadn't used in forever. Kiddo dug it out, charged it up, and took some amazing pictures. I honestly had forgotten how good 35/50mm looks. It's just better. They just feel more real.

@MissConstrue Thanks. The lighting is kind of weird RGB led lighting I had turned down to a really warm color
@recursive Ooooh, I'm about to deep dive into "how to light my rooms like someone with taste and not like someone with a loyalty card at Lowes" I've seen youtubes on doing lights like that, and it sounds so awesome. It looks great in the shot.

@recursive a Sony a7S is a terrific camera. Don't let the age suggest otherwise to you. There are plenty of working photographers shooting on gear of that vintage.

No skilled photographer is going to discount the capabilities of an a7S. The only people who don't think that's a serious piece of kit are people doing extreme work and tech bros with skill issues.

Just realized this is an old thread. I'm sure by now you know what a great camera you've got.

@sysop408 @recursive I still recommend them to people. And the way they have held their second hand value tells you you're not alone.
I have shot video by the reflected light of one candle, and it was usable.
And the make glorious web cams!

@recursive

Having intentionally aquired older a7r's myself, there's certainly nothing wrong with not having the bleeding edge models. Cheaper by far, full framed, and even the possibility of having spare cash left for adding additional quality lenses is just plain common sense.

A 3% better body for 10x the price, just because it's the latest model? It is not going to guarantee you a better photo than the one you have.

Also... keep in mind you can adapt vintage manual lenses, too!

@recursive

One caveat on #adapting #lenses...

One certainly can go deeply down the rabbit hole if one isn't careful.

@recursive this makes sense. I have not been without a proper DSLR for over 20 year, first a Nikon D50, then a D7200. Sure, the phones have been there, and they usually look like phone pictures. The Nikons are different.
