There was a 'womp' sound from the yard. I looked out the window.

Where the large pile of leaves had been, a dragon sat.

"Oi!" I called.

"The hoard was unguarded," the dragon said. "I claim it."

Every damn year. It'll leave once the leaves lose their golden hue. Meanwhile, I can't order takeaway.

@MicroSFF oh this is so adorable! 💜

@MicroSFF I’m sorry, it’s perfect until the last sentence.
I don’t get the point with the takeaway.

How does the dragon makes it impossible to order food to go ?

@Vive_Levant @MicroSFF I'm pretty sure the pizza delivery chap would have been a snack!
@MicroSFF @Vive_Levant
I'm guessing it's scaring away delivery people?
@idle @Vive_Levant @MicroSFF or it claims the food before you get it
@fuchsi @idle @MicroSFF whereas it could share : leave the food and eat only the delivery guy.
@Vive_Levant @MicroSFF yeah, way better without the last sentence!
@Vive_Levant @MicroSFF the dragon eats the courier.
@aspensmonster @MicroSFF ah ! I thought takeaway was only picked-up and different than delivered.
Thanks, makes sens.
@Vive_Levant @MicroSFF technically they are different; I just figured they meant delivery but went with takeaway because it has fewer syllables and is more specific to food.

@Vive_Levant @MicroSFF In the UK, takeaway is what people in the US refer to as delivery.

To clarify: it is a multipurpose word in the UK, when used in ordering in the restaurant it is the U.S. equivalent of “to go” and when used when ordering elsewhere it means “arrange a delivery to my home” aka the U.S. equivalent of “delivery”.

Context-driven

@semiotic_pirate Thank you for explaining! I didn't know it had a different meaning in USA. I lived in England for twenty-odd years, so tend to default to British English. @Vive_Levant
@MicroSFF but it does extend the season for having bbq. Especially when it’s friends bring in some boar that’s invaded our local forests.
@MicroSFF
Dragons are always fun to voice
@MicroSFF You're out of DoorDash or UberEats coverage area?
@mvilain @MicroSFF More like the delivery folks are afraid of being eaten by the dragon.
@MicroSFF They'll never leaf you alone
@MicroSFF You really think I'd learn by now. Every year, I tell myself I ought to bag up the leaves right away after raking them into a pile. But then I tell myself it's not like anything is gonna go wrong in mere minutes, so it'll be ok if I put it off until a little later, right? "A little later" turns into a day or two, and then I've got a big ol' dragon in the front yard. Again. <sigh>
@Aoi_X_Kaizaki @MicroSFF I find it difficult to attract #dragons to my garden. I think they might be being put off by all the St. George’s flags that the #flagshaggers have hung on the lamp posts.
@MicroSFF If you can sit on it, it must be a hoard.
@MicroSFF The other cool thing I like about this story is that so many of your readers knew what "takeaway" meant in conjunction with food delivery drivers. :D
@MicroSFF such a wonderful and lovely story, thank you <3
