ASUS ProArt 6K Review: The Ultimate Monitor for Video Editors

Now there's an ASUS shop page for the 32" 6k, but the price went up $100?

Was all ready to order the Asus 6K last night but they decided to bump up the price $100 after "advertising" it all over YouTube at a lower price. Huge pet peeve of mine is to buy anything over MSRP and in my mind the MSRP is $1299, so will wait for a sale.

BestBuy now has the Asus 6k available for ordering and it’s $1299, not $1399. I expect to be disppointed because of the matte coating and a few other issues, but I've got to give it a try. Should've just bought an XDR 5 years ago when it came out.

My long 5k nightmare might be over. First impressions are pretty good but I've only had it up for a few minutes and haven't run the calibrator on it yet.

After a few days all I have to say is that this Asus 6k is a good monitor. I set it in its Mac mode and after a few days didn't feel like I needed to calibrate it. The matte coating is effective while being pretty unobtrusive. Gets brighter than I need, no weird monitor bugs so far.

USB port collection could be better, chin nameplate/buttons is dumb, optional DIsplayWidget software seems broken.

Basically after setup forgot that I had a new monitor, other than I now have more space. 👍

Filed under, I'll never be satisfied. I'd still rather have a true 2x 34" or 38" ultrawide with an appropriate curve. Toss in Tandem OLED + high refresh rate. But until any of those happens, or Apple releases a cheap XDR 2 or much improved Studio, the Asus 6k is the monitor for me.

Fun fact, my main office this year went from no Asus monitors, to exclusively Asus monitors (3).

Long term (well for me 1.5 months is long term) of the Asus 6k. It's good! Only issue is that wake from sleep is a bit slow, like “will it wake up or did I not hit a key on the keyboard, oh there it work up" slow. Everything else seems to just work as well as I expected, no annoying bugs, don't have any big issues with the matte coating, would buy another one if needed.
@paul I've had it since September and I'm pretty happy with it as well. The wake from sleep issue is *slightly* annoying, but certainly not a deal breaker. I've also had a very occasional issue with the brightness setting resetting randomly, but it seems to be solved with switching on HDR mode in System Settings. I'd definitely recommend it, especially after price dropped back down to $1299.
@paul same experience here—I’m loving it. Interesting having more vertical space and less horizontal (i replaced a Dell ultrawide). Initially I missed the slight curve I had on the Dell, but I’m adjusting. Wake from from sleep is annoying but not a deal-breaker.
@paul Remember when displays were dumb, used connections that were purely video connections, and just worked.
@paul LG preorders have gone live today over here in Germany, it’ll arrive by the end of October – allegedly. I still keep an eye on the ASUS at several retailers, though, juuuust in case … 😜
@paul I currently have a AW3821DW, which I love the size; and really wish there was an OLED 38" out there; ...but looks like they may come in 5K2K resolutions which I'm looking forward to.
@paul I'm doing 34" UW + 27" above, and I really want to go with just a single ultrawide... but 49" makes me feel like I'd need a wider desk. (Which, I'm not complaining about, but the hassle of tearing this one down + rebuilding it would stink)
@niclake 49" I think is just too wide, I wish someone would make a 3:1 ultrawide, 4800x1600 feels like it'd be pretty perfect for me.

@paul Do you know if the 5K version is just as good?
@jjgod @paul if you mean the 27” one, I got it for my gf a couple of months ago, and it’s really, really good for the price (can be had for ~650€ here now).
@fmarini @paul Oh sweet. I'm considering it, because my wife's PC from work is not compatible with Studio Display. However it costs ~10000 NOK here so quite a bit more than 650€.
@fmarini @jjgod given the rumors of the Studio 2, I'd probably give it a wait on any other 27” unless you have a very extended return window.
@paul appreciate the review! I'm debating between this and preordering the LG Ultrafine 6K
@paul dang that looks tempting, but if I got one I’d have to figure out what to do with the 5K Samsung that I’ve only had for a year and a half
@yonatron mine is going on a test machine, somewhere…
@paul just came across this video on the LG one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J69MfNikoso

@manolo that guy has some IMO overblown issues with matte coating, he described the coating on the Asus as much worse than I think it is.
@paul do you happen to know what the scaled/“looks like” resolution choices are on an M4 Pro at all please? Specifically a Mac mini.
@hepto assuming its just going to be what it shows on the screenshot I posted. At least that's what it is on my M4 Max and I can't imagine it's going to be different on different M4s.
@paul ah thanks, apologies for missing that! 🤣 Debating between this and the Dell U3224KB - haven’t seen you mention that one or maybe I missed that as well? The camera ‘chin’ is fugly but maybe the screen quality makes up for it 🤔
@hepto I had a refurb U3224KB for a couple days, but they shipped it terribly and the camera got smashed. Pretty sure the Asus has a better coating but it’s been a while since I looked at it. 100% sure that it's < half the price and I'd never get the U3224KB for its new price.
@paul right. In the UK the Dell seems to be about a £400 premium (around £1700 vs £1300) for the better specs (on paper) and more ports. I just got rid of the Dell 40in 5k ultrawide which I loved except for the PPI. Trouble is a ‘trial and return’ approach is not quite as pro-customer on these shores!
@paul How is the vibrancy and color richness with regards to matte coating vs Studio’s glass?
@paul just got mine, experiencing a weird sensation that it curves away from me, i think because I'm coming from an ultrawide, but its trippy
@paul What was your daily driver before 6k? I’m about retire my olde lg5k. The Asus sounds promising.
