There are actually a great many people on mastodon who are not computer geeks.

The trick: you gotta grow your follows.

Y''all do remember to actually follow strangers who are interesting, right?

You're making the bubble, not the medium. I follow and chat with writers, artists, physical world makers, politicos, musicians, funny people, doctors, and -- that weirdest of all crowds -- fountain-pen fanciers.

You gotta break the bubble yourself. There's no algorithm here to do it for you, and your local feed is usually too small, too huge, or in fact a bubble itself.

@GeePawHill I still follow people pretty much on a whim. it works out.
@GeePawHill Absolutely! When I joined Mastodon, I realized that there was no algorithm pushing me to interact with strangers. So I followed lots of people. If they proved to be obnoxious, I unfollowed, but I’m left with a mix of interesting people.
@gdinwiddie Yep. The krill don't come to you, ya gotta go where they are.
@GeePawHill I still miss a particular Black woman that I followed on Twitter. She was determined to not go to a different platform, so I kept my account and went back to check on her every few days. Until she closed her account.
