Morning, all,

the Department of Defense was so named by Congress in woke 1949 as bringing together the War Department (which managed the U.S. Army and, later, its Air Force) and the Navy Department. Legally, only Congress may rename it.

Also, #UN treaties outlaw aggressive declarations of war; military force may be used only for defence of the state.

Yet Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is now calling the #DOD the Department of War.
