Trump Officials Offer $625 Million to Rescue Coal

The new effort, which includes opening 13.1 million acres of federal land for mining and eliminating pollution limits, aims to save an industry that has been declining for decades.

The New York Times

#Coal use has been declining sharply in the #US since 2005, displaced in many cases by #cheaper & cleaner #NaturalGas, #wind & #solar power.

But in a series of steps aimed at improving the economics of coal, the #Interior Dept said it would open 13.1M acres of #federal #land for coal #mining & reduce royalty rates companies need to pay to extract coal. The #Energy Dept said it would offer $625M to upgrade existing coal plants, which have been closing at a fast clip, to extend their life spans.

The #EPA said it would repeal dozens of #regulations set by the #Biden admin to curb #CarbonDoxide, #mercury & other pollutants from #coal plants. The agency would also revise a regulation limiting #wastewater #pollution from #PowerPlants that the industry considers costly.

The announcements came days after #Trump told the #UNGA that the #US would “stand ready to provide any country with abundant, affordable energy supplies if you need them,” referring to liquefied #NaturalGas, #oil & #coal. Trump has promoted the coal industry ever since campaigning frequently with coal miners 2016.

While #coal plants once generated nearly half of America’s #electricity, they produced just 16% last year. Hundreds of coal plants have retired since the mid-2000s as utilities switched to #NaturalGas, #wind & #solar power. Stricter #regulations on #air & #water #pollution have also made burning coal more expensive. Coal #mining, which has been linked to significant air pollution & water contamination as well as #BlackLung #disease in coal miners, has also faced increased federal restrictions.
@Nonilex Didn't all those coal miners he campaigned with in 2016 lose their jobs anyway once he became President? I know there were whole steel-mill towns that suffered the same fate from his "promotions".
@Nonilex WHY. WHY DO THEY WANT TO DESTROY THE EARTH?

@lor @Nonilex

to own the libs

@AlexanderVI @Nonilex

To kill us all - including themselves.

Very Kamikaze of them, no?

@lor @Nonilex lizard people.

I honestly can't come up with anything else that makes sense

@Nonilex What a shit hole country the US is.
@Nonilex
Load the lawsuit cannon!
@Nonilex It’s not enough to cut back on green energy development, but we are promoting one of the worst options. The GQP is just stupid enough to believe that trashing the earth will result in benefits for them. 😡😡😡
