Inspired by @molly0xfff's podcast/article about #RSS.... I've absolutely jumped onto this technology. Set myself up on a reader, and I've rediscovered sites & blogs I used to check regularly but sadly forgot about. Cleaned up the RSS feeds on my own sites & patched in post pictures on the WordPress generated ones.

Describing this as a way to create your own custom newspaper is right on. Better than getting stuck on the same few sites all the time.

Highly recommend!

my question is can't we use #ActivityPub everywhere we used to use RSS so that we can also boost articles and podcasts etc?

@wjmaggos @syntaxseed @molly0xfff RSS can be implemented with static sites - all that is needed is an XML file.

Isn't "boosting" an article just sharing a link to it?

A federated comment system would be great though .. blog comments were great in the days before spam.

not if the article or podcast is itself an ActivityPub item. and then readers/podcatchers are designed around that. we usually think of social media as posts that link to other content, but the fedi killer app is that it doesn't have to be that way. that creators can fully own and then track the stats and comments on one item.

@wjmaggos @syntaxseed @molly0xfff some day I'm going to have to get my head around activitypub ...

I do love blogging via static sites - I've been through a few platforms over 20 years - I don't want to go back to managing a server - but I miss comments and trackbacks ...

@wjmaggos @syntaxseed @[email protected] You could, but why take a solved problem and add tremendous complexity to it? Not everything needs to be "new" and "changed", in fact there is a lot of value in keeping things simple and stable.

@syntaxseed @molly0xfff I've been meaning to do this for a while. What software are you using?

@sephster @molly0xfff I went with the easy option & just used the one she mentions in the article - InoReader. The free plan has been great so far. Easy to get started.
@syntaxseed Where is this RSS post I keep hearing about? I'm honestly having trouble finding it on @molly0xfff's web site.

@syntaxseed @molly0xfff ok this sent me down a giant rabbit hole of โ€œwait, can I build something to take a set of curated rss feeds and turn it into an ACTUAL custom newspaper?โ€ I stated looking into buying rolls of newsprint paper and wide format printers and software to format and print the thing either daily or weekly. Itโ€™s not terribly practical, but itโ€™s still making my brain itch. Iโ€™d be the fanciest hipster at my local coffee shop ๐ŸŽฉ๐Ÿ˜บ๐Ÿ“ฐ

@stephen @molly0xfff Oh I love that idea! My family owned a print shop - if my parents hadn't retired I could have tried that out on the big copiers.

Most copy shops or office supply places with drop-in printing can easily do 11" x 17" printing a-la-carte.
