Just a note for the next time anyone schedules a conference in Texas:

It is now literally illegal for trans people to use the bathroom there.

Your trans friends and colleagues are going to be silently judging you for hosting events in a place it's illegal for them to exist when there's lots of other states to pick from.

Texas becomes 20th US state to introduce trans bathroom ban

Texas has become the 20th state to ban trans people from toilets and other facilities after governor Greg Abbott signed a ban into law.

@JessTheUnstill I was born in Texas, and I don't feel safe crossing into Texas state lines. It's reprehensible to hold a conference there.

@puppygirlhornypost2 @JessTheUnstill

My mom doesn't really get why I wont go see her in Texas either.

"Oh, you will be fine." Is all I get to my concerns.

@ElsaPreme @JessTheUnstill i brought up the fact that texas has anti-sodomy laws still in the books and my mom's reaction was "They just don't enforce that anymore"
@puppygirlhornypost2 @JessTheUnstill @ElsaPreme it should be illegal for states to have laws that have been ruled unconstitutional. Like they should have 365 days to remove those laws from the books altogether so we don't have this mish-mash of "trigger laws" where a bunch of neo-confederate goons are just waiting for a case that allows them to start enforcing the 1815 "Minorities Must Wear Price Tags In Public" law.

If you have to pee, just wet your pants in front of other people and own it. Assert dominance. Make the bigots uncomfortable seeing a huge wet spot on the front of your pants. (and maybe even smelling it too) Secretly wear a diaper if you need to. Make the bigots regret forcing trans people out of the bathrooms.

@RachaelAva1024 @JessTheUnstill

So...I should humiliate myself and give up all my dignity to... *Checks notes* Own the cons?

@CordiallyChloe @JessTheUnstill Well, the idea was to maliciously comply. I know I wouldn't have the guts to do that given my personality. Again, not the best idea. But it's a step in that direction. Surely someone else has a better idea, because this idea is pretty soiled at best.

@JessTheUnstill oh, not me.

I'm going to be judging people VERY VERY LOUDLY. EXTREMELY LOUDLY. WITH A MEGAPHONE AND LARGE PRINTED BANNERS.

@JessTheUnstill do these ppl have an "alternative" solution how one deals with personal necessities? on the streets? behind a tree? taking a ride to Mexico? sorry, this absurd. #askingforafriend
@JessTheUnstill do they have, I don't know, genital checks in every bathroom? You show your stuff to the bouncer and they then escort you to the appropriate certified cabin? Or else, how are they going to enforce that ban?

@JessTheUnstill

If it's an international conference, you shouldn't have it anywhere in the US

@JessTheUnstill Yeah, one of our teammates had to drop out of our away game vs El Paso Roller Derby. The host league would have probably been super accommodating to all, because that's how WFTDA roller derby rolls, but when you can't fly in to the damn state because the bathrooms in the airport are off limits to you, it's not much help.

Personal opinion: This wasn't unpredictable. We should have never agreed to a game in Texas in the first place, not given the current political climate.

@JessTheUnstill So let's splash our shit at the outside walls then....
@JessTheUnstill I'm no HR expert, but I suspect it be would be illegal for (eg) a British company to organise a work trip to Texas under this law, as it would count as some combination of discrimination and a failure of duty of care...
@JessTheUnstill and quite probably "but we didn't send any trans employees" wouldn't be a defence because the company is not required or automatically entitled to KNOW if their staff are trans.

@kitten_tech @JessTheUnstill Depends

If an employer uses the UK Governments Disclosure & Barring Service to vet job applicants then the employer will know if an applicant is trans

They'll need to be told every name the applicant has had along with documentation on the change for one

This applies to security work, work with vulnerable people, banking & lots of other categories

Also if a birth certificate is offered as a primary ID it has to have been issued within 12 months of birth

@kitten_tech @JessTheUnstill not since our own laws ruled that trans women aren't really women and bigots changed the equalities advice to say trans women shouldn't pee in women's bathrooms.

Like, the law does not state that it is illegal, but you're not gonna get protections on that basis any more. The present sucks.

@JessTheUnstill

Fun fact: In Ohio the law is that a venue can choose to make all their bathrooms unisex. The business interests fought these laws in Ohio, so they had to limit their 2024 law to public schools or the bill wouldn't pass. The legislation that resulted is, shall we say, a topic of ongoing absurdity.

@JessTheUnstill Someone should ask them what they think goes on in bathrooms, because these bans are so stupid.

bathrooms is the place you go to piss and shit, that is all that ever goes on in there. Nothing more nothing less.

@JessTheUnstill I'm gonna judge loud.
If you do it, you're a piece of shit.
Trans rights, motherfucker.
@JessTheUnstill
Whad'ya mean "silently?" I'm'a read their papers to their face!

@Npars01 @JessTheUnstill I heard HotWheels might be reconsidering his redistricting here in TexBanistan. A&M just fired its 3rd president in the last 4 years, last Friday and they are having protests!
@JessTheUnstill @carstenfranke Not a #transgender related question, but I’m wondering what these bathroom bills in #Texas and other states mean for the unisex “family bathrooms” you see in airports. It would be a real shame if they become a casualty in this stupid power play.

@Thumper1964 @JessTheUnstill @carstenfranke "Real manly Men have nothing to do with childcare!!!111"

/s just to be sure 😅

@JessTheUnstill my first reaction to hearing that Houston is site for posit::conf(2026) - announced at #positconf2025
@JessTheUnstill I live in Austin, I organize a conference, and holding it in Texas has never been an option (not only because of this exact issue, but partly). Next year it may be in Canada.
