Legit. I didn’t know about this term either. But I’ve ranted to friends about how advertisements are involuntary time-theft and mind control.

Capital is constantly trying to force its propaganda into our minds and lives. 100%.

I dunno how people here feel about Banksy but I’ve always quite liked this quote:

People are taking the piss out of you everyday. They butt into your life, take a cheap shot at you and then disappear. They leer at you from tall buildings and make you feel small. They make flippant comments from buses that imply you’re not sexy enough and that all the fun is happening somewhere else. They are on TV making your girlfriend feel inadequate. They have access to the most sophisticated technology the world has ever seen and they bully you with it. They are The Advertisers and they are laughing at you.

You, however, are forbidden to touch them. Trademarks, intellectual property rights and copyright law mean advertisers can say what they like wherever they like with total impunity.

Fuck that. Any advert in a public space that gives you no choice whether you see it or not is yours. It’s yours to take, re-arrange and re-use. You can do whatever you like with it. Asking for permission is like asking to keep a rock someone just threw at your head.

You owe the companies nothing. Less than nothing, you especially don’t owe them any courtesy. They owe you. They have re-arranged the world to put themselves in front of you. They never asked for your permission, don’t even start asking for theirs.

@CrabAndBroom @technocrit I think the Bugger off(?) campaign against Tobacco ads in Australia was a rather wonderful effort in the same vein. Very successful too, I might add.
@epistatacadam @CrabAndBroom @technocrit “BUGA UP” from memory I think I it was “billboards using graffiti against unhealthy promotions”?
@aeberbach @CrabAndBroom @technocrit Thanks for the correction, my memory is hazy after all this time.....😏
The pronouciation was spot on though.
I recall broadcasters grimacing whilst interviewing spokespersons....
@epistatacadam @CrabAndBroom @technocrit BUGAOFF I think
Billboard using graffiti artists against offensive advertising (almost an acronym).
I think I've a compilation somewhere from my time in Oz in 1980.
Edit, Correction: BUGAUP Billboard using graffiti artists against unhealthy promotions.

@CrabAndBroom It's a great quote! I remember seeing it before.

"Any advert in a public space that gives you no choice whether you see it or not is yours. It’s yours to take, re-arrange and re-use." - this reminds me of my own opinion that machines should never play tunes in public. If someone's phone plays a melodic ringtone, then I'm allowed to sing counterpoint or a bass line very loudly in response.

Is this just a musician/composer thing?

@miketorr @CrabAndBroom
Allowed to sing counterpoint to machine music played in public? It's almost obligatory.

@CrabAndBroom @technocrit

Yes... We're a long way down the rathole of neoliberal economic dogma's hegemony over the position of the 'Overton Window' in our thinking and in our lives. Society is being overpowered by economic dogma to meekly become 'Consumers' instead of autonomous Citizens of a Democratic State.

@CrabAndBroom @technocrit

Well I'm from Bristol so Banksy is a local hero to many.

His art is thought provoking and rarely goes wrong.

If a protest isn't causing disruption then it's not really a protest.

As long as those protesting are prepared to accept any possible consequences then carry on 🙂🤷‍♂️

A corollary of this might be that if you purchase something but never actually own it then piracy cannot be theft.

@CrabAndBroom, looks like “every day” was typoed as “everyday” – doesn't make sense as it is.

@CrabAndBroom The issue is that behind every advert is a creator, often an artist similar to Banksy. So if you can use anything from advertisement creator, you can use anything from Banksy.
