Has their "pro-life" rhetoric really meant nothing at all for years now?

In fact, it has not ever been about defending a consistent ethic of life, but about control — about the desire to assert coercive control, the wish to return the culture to some mythic point in the past when women knew their place, stayed home and served men, people of color had no rights, LGBTQ people were nonexistent.

@RainbowFrog It seems that like a whole lot of major right-wing Catholic Republican figures, he was very badly catechized. The lack of good catechesis has to be laid, very squarely so, at the feet of a crop of US Catholic bishops appointed largely by Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI in the period prior to Francis and now Leo.

@RainbowFrog I think there have long been strands in US Catholicism that are deeply authoritarian, nationalistic, and anti-intellectual. Think of Joseph McCarthy, for instance, then JD Vance, Kellyanne Conway, Mike Flynn, Rick Santorum, Phyllis Schlafly, Karoline Leavitt, Newt Gingrich, Corey Lewandowski, Greg Abbott, Ron DeSantis, Clarence and Ginni Thomas, Samuel and Martha Alito — the list could go on and on.
