Taken from another account so that I could add alt text. Please don’t boost posts that lack alt text.
@bodhipaksa And what is the source ? An available link ?

@parleur Internet is the source.

Easy, fais comme moi, duckduck "charlie kirk george floyd he's a scumbag" and you will get a link ...pick up the one you want.
@bodhipaksa

@bodhipaksa

Why not just post the text instead of the same photo + alt-text then?

Tbh, I don't fully understand the alt-text obsession completely.

@DroidPort I wouldn't say alt text was an obsession any more than not leaving your car in a disabled parking parking space or not leaving bags of trash in front of a blind neighbor's door are obsessions. There are many visually impaired people on Mastodon. They have a harder time in life than the average person. Why add to their difficulties by filling their feeds with images that lack descriptions? It's a simple act of human kindness to add a description so that VI people aren't excluded.

@bodhipaksa @DroidPort do clients not have an option to hide image/video-only posts without alt-text?

If that's not a thing it really should be.

It's not the best solution, but since you can't generally fix/control the behavior of others without a lot of effort (and often it's wasted), this would alleviate some of the annoyance of coming across such posts as an affected person.

@bodhipaksa

I should've been clearer... I mean in the context of sharing screenshots of text.

Why not just post the text to solve this issue?

@DroidPort @bodhipaksa it seems counterproductive to post an alt text that is the exact same font of the exact same text on the same background
@passwordsarehard4 @DroidPort The main point of alt text is to make images accessible to people with visual impairments. When someone uses technology to read aloud what's on the screen, and that technology encounters an image without alt text, the person doesn't know what's being posted, which is frustrating and excludes them. If the alt text is of an image that's composed almost entirely of text, then the alt text will duplicate what you see. But the alt text can be heard by a blind person.

@bodhipaksa @passwordsarehard4

Completely understand this... But once again, why wouldn't you just post the actual text instead of a screenshot of said text + alt-text?

Please don't bother replying unless you are answering that question.

@DroidPort @passwordsarehard4

Often a screenshot of text contains more text than can fit into one post, or takes up so much of the character allowance that there's no room to comment. (The alt text field can hold much more text.)

Also, I prefer how it looks. I think it's more striking and more likely to be read than a simply text post.

Lastly, it contains information that might be useful to some people. I don't know whether it's from BlueSky or Twitter, for example, but others might.

@bodhipaksa @passwordsarehard4

OK. Thanks. Personally I think a source is significantly more helpful than alt-text... And the text here in this post would've fit into a post here easily.

But I appreciate the explanation, even if I disagree with the logic. Please understand I'm not shitting on the idea of accessibility, just the logic of alt-text for text images.

@DroidPort @passwordsarehard4 For me, in this case, a source isn't important, since it's the message that's important, not who said it. People can Google the source if that's of interest to them

And I disagree that is "easily" fits into a post. Adding in quotation marks to indicate that the words weren't mine, there would have been one character spare β€” no room for any comment or context.

@bodhipaksa @passwordsarehard4

OK found the source. Its from an homoerotic male model/fitness influencer of Instagram I guess?

Quite bizarre seeing this political commentary sandwiched between his naked flexing photos.

The internet is an odd place.

@bodhipaksa that's a bad comparison.

You're making it sound like not adding alt text is an active attack on blind people. It is not.

One of the great things about Fedi is that we're all free to curate our feeds as we like. You can filter any hashtags or keywords you don't like, or people whose content you don't want to see, or posts without alt text.
There's no reason to put people down for posting or boosting stuff without alt text.

@nightoo No, I'm not saying that not adding alt text is an "active attack" on people with visual impairments. I'm saying that it's not taking them into account.

And I haven't put anyone down.

@bodhipaksa seize the memes! (and repost with alt text)
@bodhipaksa Thank you for adding alt-text.

a) because I don't need to, as I block obnoxious arseholes who think what they obsess (and the orange personage they secretly love) over about is the centre of the universe

b) so I can see who posts pol, most especially uspol, so I can spot the obnoxious arseholes and then can block

@brettm

So you demand CWs, not so you don't see the content, but so you can block people who do the thing you want them to do?

Or am I reading this wrong?

i won't lie, i got fooled for a second

@bodhipaksa

@bodhipaksa
How many Black civil rights figures were killed in front of family & friends?
@bodhipaksa I hate to say it but I hate when people tell us don't do something that isn't harmful yes I believe posts lacking alt text aren't helpful but they aren't physically harmful or mentally harmful It just makes it that certain people have a hard time Interacting with your posts

@snow Don't you think it's harmful to exclude people from a website that's intentionally designed for social interaction? Social exclusion is both frustrating and damaging.

Adding alt text is just a matter of a) caring about other people, and b) typing a bit of descriptive and helpful text.

We do one of those things (typing) all the time anyway. The other one β€” caring β€” if we don't do it then it would be good to work at it, for our own sake as well as others.

@bodhipaksa I don't think it's harmful because you're not excluding somebody from a whole website by not doing it you're excluding them from your own posts. I totally agree adding it is helpful but if you don't want to do it I understand and wouldn't think of them any worse. It's your choice to put alt text It's also your choice to boost posts without them nobody should be able to tell you to not do that nobody should be able to force you to not be able to
@snow You and anyone else not using alt text is excluding people with visual impairments from any images you post. You're making life harder for them, because they can't know in advance that your images are, in effect "blank." You're free to be that kind of person, but you don't have to be. You can be the kind of person who takes other people β€” especially those with disabilities β€” into account. It's your choice.
@bodhipaksa @alice oh fuck this tripped me out for a second. I thought it was saying the whole above was a quoted statement. Not just the literal in quotes pieces. Since they were blocked apart. Lool fucking hell it's too early for this
@bodhipaksa
One of the nice things about a post like this that it shows me who to block for being a just asking questions freezepeach individual without empathy.
@bodhipaksa Thank you for including the alt text, I wish everyone would be so thoughtful. (I don't always remember to include it, but I do try!)

@bodhipaksa

Interesting Venn diagram of Projection and Prescience.

Something about circles going round comes to mind.

@bodhipaksa jesus wept. I'm sorry people are attacking you about alt text.

Y'all. Do better.

Charlie Kirk Claimed George Floyd Wasn't Killed by Derek Chauvin

What did Charlie Kirk say about George Floyd? The controversial right-wing political pundit said some pretty shocking things about Floyd.

Distractify

@bodhipaksa "outrageous that anybody would say that of the dead, right?"

I find it disturbing that that matters so much to people. Most have no problem calling a living breathing person a scumbag, if their behavior warrants it, so why would it matter that the person is dead? Call a shovel a shovel...

When that's said, it's not a good thing that people are so eager to condemn eachother to death.

Would it not be better to wish redemption upon people, instead of misery?
