If you post a website link on Mastodon, remember to include https:// at the beginning so that it is clickable.

When you include https:// you get a clickable link like https://example.com and you may also see a link preview box below the post.

If you leave out https:// you just get a non-clickable address like example.com and no preview.

🤓 Special Bonus Tip For Nerds: You can also use other protocols for clickable links including gemini://, dat://, dweb://, gopher://, ipfs:// and ssb://

Example Domain

@FediTips I don't think the bonus tip is true ssb://connyduck.at

@ConnyDuck

Hmm... presumably they depend on the client using the protocols to render anything?

At the very least madeup:// doesn't produce a clickable link, it's only these specific protocols.

@FediTips no it depends on the server (source: I'm a client dev 😅 )

@ConnyDuck

Of course, I know your credentials very well from Tusky etc! 👍

Are these clickable links for other protocols not actually working then?

@FediTips Well when an app is installed that can handle these protocol they should work, yes. Otherwise nothing will happen.

@ConnyDuck

Ahh okay, so if they've set their client to automatically open the relevant app it should be okay?

@FediTips Yes. I'll double check with Tusky if that is actually the case, but it totally should.
