Also a huge warning: friends don’t let friends register .pe domains.

> This ccTLD's rules allow anyone to buy the domain 12 days before it expires.

Guppe is dead? · Issue #118 · immers-space/guppe

Hey @wmurphyrd 👋 I notice as of September 2025, the domains gup.pe and immers.space seem to have expired and a.gup.pe has been replaced with a WordPress installation full of SEO-targeted content ab...

@aral that's why my domains have a 30 day warning
@BenartyComputer Still, I think we can both agree it’s a dick move. Well, dick policy :)
@aral
That feels like it should be outright illegal, but these lawless days who knows?
@aral what a rediculous policy! The old owner should at least get some notice before they suddenly lose tenancy
@aral tbh guppe really outlived itself as a stop gap solution for Fediverse's inadequate specifications and software. There should've been a lot more work and traction towards groups and communal features in general in Fedi. Instead, parasocial Twitter and Instagram clones dominate. (Sent from one of them, )
@aral
Last time queer.af and now this? (exhausted)

@aral Seems like the registrar reselling it should just adjust the expiration date they present to the user to account for the effective expiration date.

Also, ICANN should slap them down. Aren't there supposed to be unified policies on stuff like this?

@dalias no, because ccTLDs are run by the country they're associated with, ICANN has little to no control over them. In my opinion (https://www.hezmatt.org/~mpalmer/blog/2024/02/13/not-all-tlds-are-created-equal.html) ccTLDs just aren't worth the risk in general.

Brane Dump: Not all TLDs are Created Equal

@womble @dalias @aral
Every ccTLD is different.

If you have a domain under .ie, you can delay paying for renewal for more than a week before it stops resolving, and more time again before it can be taken by someone else.

The .eu TLD also has a 'negative' grace period for renewals.

@dalias @aral It is about ccTLD. they don't depend on ICANN.
@aral thing is I can't, at first glance, see *anything* about this in the .pe terms of registration?
@aral Not just .pe, but "CH, .ES, .FR, .LI, .PE, .SG, .COM.SG, .COM.AU, .ORG.AU, .NET.AU" according to the source linked there: https://www.namecheap.com/support/knowledgebase/article.aspx/9916/2207/tlds-grace-periods/

@CraigStuntz @aral but grace periods are usually AFTER the expiration date...
@CraigStuntz @aral
The .eu TLD also has a 'negative' grace period for renewals.
@aral Generally be careful of registering country code domain outside your own jurisdiction.

@aslakr .com has entered the chat ;)

(But yes, good advice; or at least to avoid the dodgy ones.)
