Best #LaborDay song ever written:

“Sixteen Tons” by Merle Travis

For me, “I owe my soul to the company store” is every day

My favorite version is The Platters.

There’s a B.B. King version out there, but good luck finding it (if you do please link).

@Nonilex "The Weavers at Carnegie Hall" is the version I always think of with that song.

@Nonilex

It was written by Merle Travis from Rosewood, Muhlenberg County, Kentucky. This is the same county that John Prine wrote about in Paradise.

It is in the western coalfield region of Kentucky.

@Nonilex This is new to me, and I love it. Was a little kid when the Tennessee Ernie Ford version was a hit. His deep voice and the lyrics caught my ear and scared me a little.
@Nonilex
I like Tennessee Ford
@Nonilex imo, the slower versions have more impact. This live version by boosts the groove up to 11. https://youtu.be/PjXhHhxlseM

@Nonilex Stevie Wonder also sang a great version with quite a lot
despair.
@Nonilex Tennessee Ernie Ford owns that song.

Here is a great illustrated explainer (comic strip) about company towns and how evil they were:
https://thenib.com/company-towns-history/

It uses the lyrics to the song, "Sixteen Tons" as a frame for the information presented.
