@louie Tricky question. I’ve chosen tablet because I love my iPad(s) but I am actually thinking of Surface Pro where there can be a full, desktop OS running on it.

I know it’ll never happen in the Apple ecosystem but I rather like the tablet form factor + desktop OS combination regardless.

(And I’d just stick it in a keyboard case and make it a laptop, anyway. Does that count as cheating?)

@feets it’s gotta be an existing product. You can have a keyboard with your iPad but you can’t have macOS on your iPad.
@louie I knew it was too good to be true. I guess I’m hackintoshing a Surface Pro to run Sequoia 🙃🥲
@louie Very tricky question, because I immediately think of the software running on it. A theoretical future version of iPadOS might be all I need, perhaps running on the perfect foldable hybrid. But today I have to choose laptop.

@lensco For iPad’s entire existence, it’s had this *theoretical potential* to replace computers, but it still doesn’t manage to actually do it because it lacks the tools to make things for itself.

I think that’s what continues to make a traditional computer still the best.

@louie I would love to see how the results of this poll on Mastodon stack up.against those on other social media platforms!
@louie
I voted for laptop, yet I spend all my time on my phone. Hmm.

@louie Something like a PinePhone that I could plug a keyboard/mouse/monitor into and have laptop-esque functionality at home, but stick in my pocket when it's time to go? I'm good with that.

My wife wrote a book ON HER PHONE. Mostly-bog-standard Android. She wants a desktop to do the final upload on, but the writing and the editing? ON. Her. PHONE. Amazing what you can do with these little things.
