I got into computers as a kid because they were fun. It was fun figuring out how things worked and writing silly little programs to paint things on the screen. Communicating with people all over the world using computers and networks only added to the enjoyment.

We are all aware of how governments and corporations are using computer technology for dubious and evil ends. Many of us have been ground down by toxic work environments and late-stage capitalism. Our communications channels are spammed with bad actors.

But it is still possible to find joy in even the simplest hacks. Learn something new that isn't jammed down your throat by your job or some influencer. Write a silly little program to paint things on the screen, or control the lights in your home, or feed your pets. Find a supportive community online, and make plans to meet them offline. Learn, create, socialize, grow.

Don't lose the fun.

@hal_pomeranz my path into IT sounds similar. The computer nerd at school and working in the tech industry my whole life. Still a nerd at heart and find joy in tinkering in my down time having setup ADSB, AIS and Radiosonde trackers and building my own antennas leveraging my electronics knowledge. Tinkering with home automation now with HomeAssistant and Zigbee devices all around my house.
