I got into computers as a kid because they were fun. It was fun figuring out how things worked and writing silly little programs to paint things on the screen. Communicating with people all over the world using computers and networks only added to the enjoyment.

We are all aware of how governments and corporations are using computer technology for dubious and evil ends. Many of us have been ground down by toxic work environments and late-stage capitalism. Our communications channels are spammed with bad actors.

But it is still possible to find joy in even the simplest hacks. Learn something new that isn't jammed down your throat by your job or some influencer. Write a silly little program to paint things on the screen, or control the lights in your home, or feed your pets. Find a supportive community online, and make plans to meet them offline. Learn, create, socialize, grow.

Don't lose the fun.

@hal_pomeranz ngl... pretty sure I have ruined all my chances to get into tech but at this point Idc seeing all these current garbage trends.
@alex02 You may not earn money from working in tech, but nobody can keep you out of tech if that's what you want to do. Working on a surplussed computer running Linux and learning as you go is still "being in tech" and doesn't cost you anything but time. Fuck the gatekeepers, my friend. If computing is a passion, I say go for it!
@hal_pomeranz my path into IT sounds similar. The computer nerd at school and working in the tech industry my whole life. Still a nerd at heart and find joy in tinkering in my down time having setup ADSB, AIS and Radiosonde trackers and building my own antennas leveraging my electronics knowledge. Tinkering with home automation now with HomeAssistant and Zigbee devices all around my house.

@hal_pomeranz I had a very similar start with computing.

I no joke wrote an extraordinarily janky Perl script chocked full of pattern matching to look for stray wine processes.

Is it going to make money? Is it practical? Is it even reasonable? No.

I did it because I’d all but lost any perl knowledge I had and it’s just genuinely good clean fun.

Thanks for typing this, it’s really what still keeps me loving technology, other than games.

@hal_pomeranz I been doing a lot of that with Home Assistant lately hosted on my raspberry pi. I also taught myself Linux back in the month win10 EOL date was first announced & i never booted windows since. Even for work. The last few years prior, I seen computers as a chore. And like u, I grew up loving computers. In 5th grade they had me fixing them in school. But these past couple years learning linux has reignited that spark from childhood & I am really truly enjoying it again. Self hosting everything I can, trying out new open source replacements for literally everything (except 2 dumb work programs (but they work under Linux)). Yep, the flame did almost go out for me, but it is lit again & I'm back at it! 😄🐧
@Zander I’m glad to hear this!
