@bsletten very nice and gentle introduction 😀

Only small suggestion is to write it using org-mode instead of markdown! More emacsy that way. github will preview it similarly to markdown.

@bsletten I'm running GNU Emacs starting age 29 now 40
@bsletten I don't want to whine about Emacs advocacy, but this reads very much as LLM-generated "content" and the single big commit was co-authored by Claude. The GitHub user/org's account contains various other AI-generated books on programming topics.
@sanityinc it is by no means AI-generated as far as I can tell. It is well-organized, introduces things in good order, has exercises, and is funny. If it is, it’s the best AI-generated content I’ve seen. He may use Claude for formatting and whatnot, but I think there was a lot of thought put into it.
@sanityinc I see your point about the rest of his content, but the quality is good.

@bsletten @sanityinc you realise I'm only doing this from a place of deep inadequacy because I've dabbled and quit so many times
@rgarner @sanityinc
Well let me throw down the #emacs gang sign in response. I think it’s also how you get your next message in mu4e.
@bsletten @rgarner it's an involuntary gang sign formed by our mangled fingers
@bsletten @rgarner While this was an obvious joke, I should add that I (fortunately) have never had any discomfort from Emacs and its keybindings. Potential finger manglement should not be a reason to avoid Emacs, particularly when there are so many other reasons to choose from, like the existence of cats and the outdoors.
@sanityinc @bsletten just installed emacs again. Just quit from emacs with `ps aux | grep emacs | xargs kill` again. Same time next year?
@rgarner @sanityinc C-x C-c. But, sure, I’ll put in a recurring todo in org-mode of +1y. Maybe next year you can open a file before quitting. (C-x C-f).
@bsletten @sanityinc fingers crossed! Because of emacs, apparently
@bsletten I'm happy to be wrong. 🤷 I read through a couple of sections, and also the open issues. I suppose a good outline plus Claude would get you a long way towards this. If it's human work, it's a shame to have an LLM reformat it, because all those emoji-headings and lists are a slop staple.
@bsletten I feel very called out for being a middle aged computer scientist in a good way. :)
@cidney We wear it as a badge of honor, don’t we?
@bsletten I'm more interested in why young people like it, which a surprising number do!
