The revolution will not happen on the platforms owned by the oppressors.
@Em0nM4stodon Though it would be really poetic if it did...
@Em0nM4stodon

I've actually thought about this one. Let's say the goal is to get people to move from corporate social media to the Fediverse. Awesome. I would agree; I think that's a great goal to have. How are we supposed to spread the word without using the same platforms these people are already using? I'm not trying to be inflammatory here; I'm actually asking. I saw it with the (admittedly, very brief) TikTok ban. In the days leading up to the ban, people who were already on TikTok found out about the Fediverse, and posted on TikTok about it. I would've been that guy if I'd already had a TikTok account, and I did not. Looking back on it now, I feel like I should've made an account over there myself just to help get the word out, and I didn't do that either.
@christian_freiherr_von_wolff @Em0nM4stodon That's different than trying to make your revolution happen there. It's opportunistic and with an understanding that you're seizing specific opportunities where there's a gap in their defenses, with no pretense that sustained activity there won't be met with bans or algorithmic shadowbans.
@christian_freiherr_von_wolff @Em0nM4stodon I think the warning that the revolution won't take place on their platforms is not a call for a boycott on principle but a call to avoid compromising yourself spending all your time trying to be heard and make a difference on a platform operated with the intent to prevent that.

@christian_freiherr_von_wolff @Em0nM4stodon IIRC once Twitter turned Xhittier they banned links in profiles to Mastodon IDs, joinmastodon, etc. They will not let you use their platform against them.

I was going to point out that was both authoritarian and corporate of them, but then realized that's the exact dictionary definition of fascism.

@Em0nM4stodon Is this our age's version of "the revolution will not be televised"?

@dragonfi @Em0nM4stodon

Thanks for the Gil Scott-Herron shout out. Catch him in his season 1 SNL performance here:

"Johannesburg" 12:46
"A Lovely Day" 1:02:11

Season 1 of SNL is yet more evidence that civilization peaked in the 1970s.

A great man once said, "I am condemned to used to tools of my enemy to defeat them." (if you know, you know).

Use their platforms until they destroy it themselves.
@Em0nM4stodon creating our own platforms is part of the revolution
@Em0nM4stodon i agree because the revolution will happen in the streets not in cyberspace 😊

I would go further and say that the revolution will not happen online, and any mention of it will be scrubbed by AI.

Every good anarchist should read David Graeber's "Lost People: Magic and the Legacy of Slavery in Madagascar", where he describes the functioning anarchist culture on the island, and the shadow government that pretends that they rule, but actually don't.

If you want to see a DRAMATIC revolution, watch a movie.

@_chris_real @Em0nM4stodon yesss!!!!n rojava and the zapatistas are good examples of anarchist adjacent polities existing now true story:in 2013 during the raqqa campaign in rojava i almost ran off to join them where id absolutely have died! like 50 people from the sf bay area ended up going! its a fascinating tale that is waay too much text for mastodon lol

The only thing people hate more than the way things are, is change.

@Em0nM4stodon

@rabble ends his podcast with a line from Subcomandante Marcos (EZLN) that we're going to need a revolution in social media to make revolution possible. I think that's it. I'd love more info on where that's from.

@Em0nM4stodon gently begging all the orgs in my town to stand up any kind of web presence and anything that puts out iCal ics files so that I can attend their events as a non-Facebooker

even a public Google calendar is a huge step up because you can see those while logged out

@babble_endanger @Em0nM4stodon When I moved here, I was so excited to discover that every public-facing department in my town offers ics urls.

This should be standard. I love it.

@Em0nM4stodon in a way, sure. On the other, if you want a revolution, you probably want people to join so you need them to hear your message so you talk about LA 24/7 "music festival" which is a code name for the manifestation against ICE
@Em0nM4stodon or on computers surveilled and controlled by the oppressors
@Em0nM4stodon The revolution will not happen on any platform because there are no revolutionaries left.
@Em0nM4stodon The revolution will not be televised!
@Em0nM4stodon or as Audrey Lorde would say: "the master's tools will never dismantle the master's house"

@Em0nM4stodon damn straight! Let’s co create. 🍁 Imagine a co-owned video network for people not platforms!

@atomicpoet is working on #PeerTube #cooperative meanwhile I am going full speed ahead with #FediCollective to bring devs and creatives together in Vancouver to build the #openweb the ethical and inclusive way in our #ThirdSpace over coffee and cowork!

@Em0nM4stodon I've been pondering this a lot lately. In many ways, software solutions are just the tip of the iceberg.

The base of all digital systems is physical rack space, limited by leasing costs. Then there's power and network requirements (preferably redundant), also dominated by the same investor class.

The stumbling block seems to be high real estate costs, and I wonder what the best way past that can be.

@mpotter @Em0nM4stodon apologies for the evangelism, but are you familiar with Henry George, the 19th century American who framed a social revolution in terms of real estate prices? #georgism #geoism #landvaluetax

@michiel @Em0nM4stodon I hadn't heard of him, but I looked him up and I think he made the point pretty well that poverty is caused by monopolies on land.

Cyber real estate is a similar sort of race for resources and control.

@mpotter thanks for taking the time. It's my belief that George's thinking about public interest vs monopoly ownership is a powerful tool for analyzing digital rent extraction, housing crises, and environmental problems, so I'm trying to spread awareness where I can.
@Em0nM4stodon Remember Arab Springs and everyone were gushing about the "power of Social Media"
