Some great eats in #WashingtonDC - will see how many of my bookmarked places we get to.
Will thread all those #Food related posts here 👇🏽 and tag with #DasEatsDC so it's easy to mute.

Edited to add - I'll not CW or hide pics - there'll be all sorts of non vegetarian fare

I'll start my #DasEatsDC 🧵 1/n
with dinner after we got to DC and our hotel.
Was a rather long and full day already with drive from pgh with stop at @CatoctinCreek and then Pentagon/Arlington Costco (on Friday after noon 😵‍💫) but we persevered and headed over to #UnionMarket that I'd heard a fair bit about.

Bustling on a sat evening, but many vendors were closed or shutting down by the time we got there

Glad there was a lot of seating outdoors! Too long a line at some places - picked up dumplings and a couple of bao from Laoban dumplings. Dumplings (pork & chive) were ok, (beef) bao were um interesting - filling was kabab style/spiced ground beef
Went back to Bidwell that had an oyster special (even if it's still so hot these days) and let the kids order what they felt like. Oysters were terrific, well shucked and tasty - we got a 2nd doz, hey $15/doz & kids (all of us really) dig these

#UnionMarket was... a touch touristy perhaps but I suppose markets are like that. Anyways turns out we passed a bunch of restaurants on the drive and drive back to the hotel. So partner and I ended up walking over from the hotel and getting a bit of takeout
Crispy roast chicken was decent, lo mein was meh. Place looked much better than the food. The all-day everyday dim sum menu looked good but we won't go back

Headed to Chinatown for today's lunch after a bit of walkabout the National Mall area. Skipped Kura Sushi (hey we have one in Pittsburgh; no haven't been to that either) and went to Chinatown Express. Approach and entry seemed promising, even if empty when we went in

Yes we did go with the roast duck - and it was magnificent! Melt in the mouth full on flavor. Mostly HK style food - but kid2 isn't a fan of black bean sauce so skipped clams or oysters with that. Thought it would be tripe but the soy sauce intestines were super! (Partner is sometimes put off by the um aroma on this sometimes - not today!). Crispy (spicy; salt & pepper) squid was great too. Testament to fabulousness were the table sauces! 🤤 (especially the pickled garlic slices)

Made it for some of the vaunted #Ethiopian fare in DC.
Been years since we had Ethiopian - and after all day conferencing (me) and various museum/art visits (family) and low key or picnic packed lunches - Family Ethiopian, a little walk away was a welcome feast!

Order = Vegetarian special: diffen missir, kayser, gomen, missir wot
+ Meats: Special kitfo, dulet and (served on plate) geba weta

Will fill in with deets of a couple of days of terrific eats (and drink) such as this*
but for now a quick stop for lunch after a 40 min charge up of the EV in Rockville MD, as we drive out. Filipino lechon! Tiny place in a strip mall - doing brisk takeout mostly.
Got the ½ slow roasted Cebu style belly, bowl of the Lechon kawali (crispy belly), bowl of fried rice and side of the sweet longanisa to share.

8/n Catching back up on #WashingtonDC eatscapades. Walking from the convention center & conference towards hotel and/or Chinatown, Mall area, we passed Jaleo. Count me a fan of Chef Andrés's food + humanitarian work - it seemed empty at lunch so we stopped in. Restaurant Week Lunch menu didn't seem too exciting and paella was too long a wait so just got a couple of apps to share & taste. Squid was excellent - garlicky (touch hard) rice, rabbit rich like a curry.

@SRDas I’d never in a million years order this kind of food or sample it. Can’t believe those photos show appetizers. They look like the main course of meals. But it is fascinating to me and I appreciate your photos and stories about these eatscapades.
@cobalt123 they were slightly large as apps - worked great to share (and then we did go elsewhere for a full lunch! :) stay tuned).
Other 'popular' dishes just didn't seem so exciting (patatas bravas - fried cubes potates with some aioli or sauteed garlic shrimp/gambas main - not that much bigger than an app, going by orders at the table near us).
We try and order/eat things we wouldn't normally be able to do at home...

@SRDas
awesome! looks delicious

i have started making more ethiopian at home, bc i love it so much.
injera is not my fave,. i have learned you can get the special flour but it requires an overnight fermentation so i pretty much never make that.

but there a a few veggie wots that i adore

i got berbere from burlap & barrel recently too - highly recommend

https://www.burlapandbarrel.com/products/berbere

Berbere

@rustoleumlove I've made some lamb before - and some spiced butter but not too many other dishes.
I need to get some good berbere and figure out the blend. Never tried injera (never picked up the flour), but have fermented batter for dosa.
The misir wot (lentils) was interesting - so similar but also not, to some Indian cooking and spicing

@SRDas

i agree, re: misir wot has some similarity to indian. there are a lot of delicious red lentil stews from different parts of the world that IMO are not very different-tasting
