The contorting on @upgrade to defend Tim Cook like he's a poor boy who doesn't have a choice but to obey and be friends with President Trump is disgusting enough.

But the cherry on top was when I heard those two white men explaining to queer and POC employees at Apple that they should be glad their CEO hasn't cut DEI or implemented discriminatory measures like Disney.

What in the actual fuck is wrong with you?

@nileane @upgrade It’s so wild that the line of thinking is that Tim Cook had to do this at all just because he’s the CEO.

I reject the notion entirely! He doesn’t have to! He can still “keep Apple going and being successful” and not have done it. And the thing is, we’ll never see that happen to know it can be done, because we were forced into this reality instead.

But the idea that it would’ve been impossible to not cave? I don’t buy one second of that thinking.

@nileane @upgrade I think the thing I just hate about this is this is not just “doing something you don’t want to do” or “hating every minute of it” thereby making it okay. This is not just “eating shit.”

Shipping an app too early is something I don’t want to do. I can hate every minute of making icons for a client that is pointing me in the wrong direction. I can eat shit during a meeting. But—

This is specifically caving to authoritarianism. And it is unlike every other thing I would do.

@louie @nileane @upgrade Yes, and: I think that whole notion of „he hates it, but he has to do it, cause it’s his job“ is super dangerous. Cause it relieves him from responsibility for his actions, and offloads that responsibility to… kind of no one.

(I don’t want to overuse nazi comparisons, but „I was just doing my job“, or more specifically „I was just following my orders“ has its own wikipedia page. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superior_orders)

@nileane Yeah. I heard it live, and it made me angry enough to actually pay for a membership just to be able to say that comment about queer employees. Glad they picked it up, but disappointed how they dismissed it.
It’s true, Apple is still better than others (no change in DEI policies, still releasing products themed with queer flag colors), but that’s a low, low bar.
@nileane In the chat, people said that if Cook resisted more, he‘d get fired and replaced by someone more in line with Trump‘s regime, so this is actually the best he can do. If that‘s realistic, I guess that’s a good argument? But I have no idea if it is.
@fi IMO it's always easy to defend the worst actions with a series of what ifs.
No one knows how another CEO would react and behave. What we know for sure though is that Tim Cook doesn't have to be a Trump supporter.

@nileane @fi he doesn’t have to be for sure.

Looking at other autocrats however - he stands to benefit a lot from it. Autocracies are already beneficial for capitalism because they dramatically reduce the amount of people you need to deal with. I wouldn’t rule it out that they kicked the pros and cons inside and figured they are best setup comforting the dumb „dealmaker & business“ autocrat Trump. I don’t care. I hope it stops. All of it.

@fi @nileane This is a very convenient argument because it lets people draw an arbitrary line in the sand and act like they’re stating a fact. It also suggests Cook has no autonomy and is acting under huge constraints from the board, but there’s just no evidence of that.

It’s an easy way to excuse Cook’s actions as “he had to do it”, but this is as much speculation as “oh look how unhappy he looked while at the White House”. It doesn’t actually change what happened.

@fi @nileane Also worth noting that when commentators talk about Apple’s financial success under Cook, it’s always because of his singular operations genius, but as soon as he does something “distasteful”, it’s the board’s fault or his hands are tied somehow.
@odin @fi @nileane AFAIK Microsoft have not done the ‘bowing’ to Trump thing (though they are involved in other horrible things), so I’m not sure I buy that Cook has to do that.
@torb Microsoft is doing way more than just bowing unfortunately :/

@nileane i do miss some people from the relay discord but every time i start thinking about rejoining shit like this keeps coming up. nearly same on atp, but at least marco pushed against it a little bit
@jiji @nileane same, at this point I'm only in there for the emotes

@nileane Assuming good intentions, I think they were trying to engage humility about the tradeoffs that Cook considers in his decision-making.

That said, they don't conclude that because this is the best his decision-making can offer, it's time for him to step down. Avoiding that, the only other option is to spin wheels about the pros and cons of those decisions with a pundit's distance.

I get why the blind spots manifested, but I agree that they need to do better for their audience.

@nileane Do you think John Siracusa's Apple Turnover and Apple Turnaround articles give a better version of this genre of perspective on Apple leadership?

I thought those articles were considered when I read them, but I figure I should check my biases.

@nileane Felt the same listening to it. Relay podcasts have been my favourite for a decade but something seems to have changed in recent months. Maybe it’s me but it seems like a distinct change in values. Jarring.

@craigscrogie @nileane huh. I’m not sure I’ve noticed that across the board, but some hosts do seem to make some real value judgements while still paying for AI memberships and saying “it’s for my work.”

I haven’t listened to Upgrade yet, but I do hope they get feedback and respond to it.

Connected should be interesting this week with some relay/macstories team crossover.

@nileane @upgrade oh dear, not got round to listening to this weeks episode yet but judging by this I may have to review if I continue my membership renewal in couple months.

@nileane I was speaking off the cuff about the DEI stuff, in relation to a question we got from the discord.

From how this made you feel i realise that I was not well-prepared to answer the question. I did not mean it in the way this has come across.

@imyke I don't know what I'm supposed to make of this response. I've read it a few times, but I can't tell if this is supposed to be an apology? In which I'm to blame for having 'felt' this way?

In any case, you shouldn't bother yourself with how I feel. My comment isn't about me nor about my feelings. It's about your willingness to defend Cook's actions, seemingly at all costs, which inevitably leads you to speak off the cuff about matters that affect real lives of real people getting hurt.

@imyke The only thing you need to know about my feelings is perhaps that I'm incredibly disappointed as a longtime listener and paid subscriber.

@nileane @upgrade Mike, Jason. Respectfully, wind your necks in a little.

May I politely suggest you get some formal training and/or lived experience before discussing this subject again.

At best, you display foolish naivety. At worst, well, the parallel with “I’m was only following orders" should tell you everything you need to know.

@nileane Merci bcp d'avoir tiré attention.
