There needs to be: * incentives to manufacture things that can be repaired * a general shift to see repairability as a sign of quality, luxury and responsibility * training a new generation to do the work * support for these trades so it's a viable way of life Having a job fixing things is one of those types of work that can nourish the soul. But it needs to nourish the wallet too.

"If all billionaires and mega corps paid the same amount of taxes that I pay -- a retired person living on a very small pension and it's about 22% to Federal taxes -- we could have universal healthcare, universal secondary and post-secondary education, accommodations and some sort of UBI for homeless people, and universal daycare and elder care."

If all billionaires and mega corps paid the same amount of taxes that I pay -- a retired person living on a very small pension and it's about 22% to Federal taxes -- we could have universal healthcare, universal secondary and post-secondary education, accommodations and some sort of UBI for homeless people, and universal daycare and elder care. That's what the system of capitalism and wealth worship has taken from us and bottom line it means years of life taken from 99% of citizens so that billionaires and mega corps can wallow in incomprehensible quantities of money.

If they're rounding up immigrants and selling them into slavery, I think we can do better than Joe Biden's kindler, gentler, viciously racist border policies. Let's demand a western hemisphere-wide open borders treaty. An American Schengen, if you will. Let's straight up demand guaranteed housing, food and jobs; free healthcare, free education and free childcare. Let's demand free mass transit everywhere, a rapid phase-down of all carbon-based energy sources and massive subsidies for renewables. Free utility-intertie rooftop solar for anyone who wants it. Let's dismantle the electoral college while we're at it and demand strict rules against monopoly power and money in politics. Reverse Citizens United and eliminate qualified immunity for cops.

Dropping this in as a statement of principle:

"@RickiTarr Right. I mean after all, people say they want fair treatment for everyone. How's that, you want everyone to be fairly miserable? That's not the way! My desire is not that no one should have the good things I enjoy, but that everyone should. What are we fighting for, anyway?"

Edit: adding quotes to mark this as Fraggle's post, not mine.

Some guideposts & touchstones from #HeatherCoxRichardson

Everybody is created equal.
The government has a responsibility to protect that equality,
To make sure that everybody is treated equally before the law,
They have equal access to resources,
& they have a right to a say in their government.

The government has a role to play in:
Regulating business,
Providing a basic social safety net,
Promoting infrastructure,
& protecting civil rights. >

The government has a role to play in protecting the individual from:
• big business,
•from poverty,
• & from the things that will stop an individual from being able to make the best of her or his life.

The people have a right to consent to their government, & to have a say in it.

To do:
• Protect the right to vote.
• Get rid of gerrymandering.
• Protect the right to petition your government.

"Human rights are for everyone.

No, dignity is not conditional.

No, your worth is not decided by your gender, race, income, ability, identity, age, or beliefs.

No, justice should not be reserved for the privileged few.

No one is “less than.”

You are human. That alone is enough to deserve safety, respect, equality, and freedom.

Every person. Every place. Every time."
