@SmudgeTheInsultCat One of my family's most important Christmas tree ornaments is made out of an astray.
@SmudgeTheInsultCat made a clay ashtray in art and made a napkin holder in shop class by bending acrylic. Both are still in this house.

Our family doctor smoked during office visits when I was a child.

@FallsMom
I just imagined a kindly family doctor saying "You're in good health!", and then turning towards the large smoker full of briskets that he has in his office
@SmudgeTheInsultCat

@SmudgeTheInsultCat Yes, and they were made from *asbestos*!!

I still remember the uniquely squishy texture of a handful of asbestos. It's a wonder any of us are alive.

@SmudgeTheInsultCat We didn't do ashtrays but my mom used the project that was supposed to be a hot water jar like used in Japanese tea ceremony as a lighter holder
@SmudgeTheInsultCat they were clear glass ashtrays with a photo of loving child on the bottom, so that doting smoking parent could smush their butts in the little one’s face.

@SmudgeTheInsultCat
Yup. Guilty as charged.

(This was first or second grade, made of clay. I like to think that if I had been older I would not have even considered making one.)

@SmudgeTheInsultCat and cigarettes boxes in woodworking class
@SmudgeTheInsultCat Yes, first self made clay school craft project was an ashtray present for my dad. It was thick and lumpy and ugly, but he kept it forever😁

@SmudgeTheInsultCat

Heh. We were made to cover a bottle in plasticine and "decorate" it with peas. Mum still brings that up, guess she was really "pleased" with the gift! :-D

Oh, and we used to make up boxes for postal deliveries in our craft lessons. They even paid something for that!

And if I remember how we used to gather acorns in the evenings with our torches! Oh man, acorns! And they paid for that too!

Oh, and we used to turn wooden pins on the laith! For that, bloody hell, we had to go to the woods and bring back a birch log!

And when the tech teacher wasn't hungover enough, we were sawing rebar with hacksaws, bloody hell. Why? Well, just to have something to do! :-D

@SmudgeTheInsultCat I made one out of metal, pounding it with a mallet into a wooden die after heating it.

Never used, since we didn't smoke. πŸ™‚

@SmudgeTheInsultCat isn't that technically an urn? <scnr> 😸
@SmudgeTheInsultCat my elder brother did that in metalwork at school
@SmudgeTheInsultCat
Never did that but my dad worked in the liquor store
