Jeremy Brett was the quintessential Holmes, living and breathing the part in ways that haven't been done before or since. Brett didn't just play Sherlock Holmes. He WAS Sherlock Holmes.

This iteration of English literature's Greatest Detective is remarkable, however, not only for its titular lead, but for the portrayal of loyal friend and collaborator Dr. John Watson. The majority of adaptations have depicted him as a bumbling fool for laughs.
But the Granada series Watson, played first by David Burke and then by Edward Hardwicke, played the character as an intelligent, competent, capable man, matching and, on rare occasions, exceeding Holmes' biting wit.
But the Garnada series Watson, played first by David Burke and then by Edward Hardwicke, played the character as an intelligent, competent, capable man, matching and, on rare occasions, exceeding Holmes' biting wit.
Burke's Watson often gave as good as he got when it came to trading playful barbs with Holmes, and the chemistry between the two actors was priceless. This was no absent-minded Nigel Bruce interpretation, but a man of wit nearly as sharp as that of his friend and colleague.

When Burke departed the show following wrapping on The Final Problem, he recommended the equally talented Hardwicke to replace him. Hardwicke's Watson was more serious in tone than Burke's, but no less capable and intelligent.

While the Granada Sherlock Holmes series often deviated from its source material, it always remained true to the spirit thereof, especially when it came to depicting Watson. For that it shall always have my respect and admiration.

Note in the first scene between Holmes and Watson how jovial the banter is, even when Holmes is deliberately trolling Watson, and how Watson soon gets his revenge by pointing out a fact about a visitor to which Holmes was not privy.
