I prefer hyphens, although many word processing apps insist on converting them to en dashes.

Twists and turns! I consciously ensure nothing is predictable. Even that there's a conventional redemptive-power-of-love arc at the centre of this wild ride doesn't become obvious until near the end. Read it a second time and you'll get that this is really a love story masquerading as a murder mystery/thriller.
That my MC, for once, is *not* motivated by profit, and is completely in love with his source, isn't obvious.
