vibe coders have discovered "coding"
@jonny Times iike this, one wonders how much it costs to have one's eye-rolling muscles surgically removed.
@nev you know i would never admit to going on reddit.com on my all-ai-slop account to gaze upon the slop
@jonny @nev we've all looked at things we're not proud of on reddit
@Taweret it is truly my hateread platform, i exclusively subscribe to things that i can't stand or find perplexing
@jonny I don't know what you mean. reddit is a sensible place full of the most grounded, sensible people
@Taweret
WHAT DO they think is making the noise of the world I must know
@Taweret
That subreddit is like 100% people who need to see a doctor and 50% of them are true solipsism where they literally believe they are the only person who is real
@jonny yeah I always kind of hope a lot of them are just teenagers who believe weird things because they're fifteen and will grow out of it but yeah....
@Taweret
It is the nexus of Mandela effect, "private theory of quantum everything LLM psychosis," and "nobody buys groceries but me has everyone been replaced by robots." The heady brew of people for whom not allowing questioning any basic assumptions as a moderation practice is very attractive
@Taweret @jonny Depends. Some weird teenagers are definitely on Reddit. There are unfortunately subreddits as well that reinforce delusional thinking. It is basically the non-AI equivalent of ChatGPT psychosis. Not all of Reddit is like this, but its structure makes it easy for such communities to form.

@iwein
@Taweret
Incredibly, their entire post history is about installing a gigantic generator at their house so a) mystery solved and b) that is a remarkably good conspiracy theory to fill their specific need
@iwein
@Taweret
Here is a video from them and at around a minute you can literally hear the fact that the gigantic generator they have connected to their house is in fact the background noise in question

@iwein
@Taweret
The generator video is bottom post. This is a masterpiece
@jonny @iwein damn he's got a big yard
@Taweret
I was 100% jealous of that setup
@jonny we should've gone into the bagel business

@jonny @iwein @Taweret I had to look up the post and not only did OP somehow not make the connection between "installed a fuckoff huge diesel generator in my backyard" and "suddenly there is loud noise", no one told them, either

well, maybe one person did but their post was deleted, impossible to say

@jonny @iwein @Taweret oh, wow. that is quite something.

@jonny
Chickens coming home to roost. 🙂
Sorry to be so unoriginal…

@Taweret

@Su_G @jonny @Taweret Headless chickens coming home to roost, you mean.
@jonny So, somewhere between "we help," "we advise," and "we watch?"
@jbqueru
Feels like that number is too low to pay the bills.
@jonny
@jbqueru
That’s per hour, right? 🙂
@jonny
@jonny
All acceptable when nobody moans that we start billing obscene rates. K thx bai
@jonny the first comment is "This will not scale." lol
@giflian @jonny This is funny, yes, but it makes me ask the question “do people genuinely believe that ‘AI’ scales?” Obviously there are local applications that sidestep the question but, like, the agent based things are these sprawling… anyway. Yeah. I don’t understand things, you know?

@jonny

sorry but I just had to boost a whole branch of this thread because it was a journey and it made me laugh

@jonny I know just the term for this: technical debt remediation
@jonny jfc this makes me see red
@liquor_american
You will not be pleased to learn that what OP means here is for experts to come in and write better prompts that will vibe code even harder
@jonny I understand that perfectly, and the red I see can only get so red
@jonny the steady state will be gig work for everyone, won't it
@mmby
Excuse me i think you mean independent entrepreneurship and opportunity optimization for everyone
@mmby @jonny that’s the goal, to grind anyone who doesn’t already own capital down to the least agency a person can possibly hold
@jonny this is like techbros trying to fix transportation and inevitably all ending up with trains
@jonny another week and they’ll think up libraries, because it would be great if all the references the human need were in one place.

@jonny

So, Competence As A Service?

@Brynawel @jonny

...have they reinvented the concept of "a job"?

@jonny I was helping someone who had vibed their way to nearly having a web and mobile app ready.

There were some omissions that were obvious to me and I was helping them prompt their way to accuracy. At one point I did say "I can just write this bit" but they said "But I won't have you every day"

Anyway the next day I was meant to help them it completely lost the mobile app code so I told them to give me a shout when they got it to the same stage again.

@jonny and in fairness this person could afford the vibe stuff. They couldn't afford me for the same job, but it seems like such a false promise and they're losing their marbles.
@davey_cakes @jonny
That's the spot where people need to realize that things have a cost and you can't really dodge it if you want your shi# to be of some quality.
We can vibe, but then expect to be garbage in general.

@siim @jonny yeah, it's not quite a sweet spot between an off-the-shelf solution and custom dev yet.

And I wouldn't completely object to such a sweet spot, if it existed.

But business critical stuff and dice rolling is a bad match.

Fart out a marketing site by all means...

@davey_cakes
@siim
I would prefer it if programmers recognized the patterns that got us to this point where this is the only way to make a website now - and LLMs only deepen those patterns of hyperverbose, tech heavy deployments - and saw it as their responsibility to design for low resource, low knowledge circumstances.
@jonny @davey_cakes @siim
This makes the old "WordPress but with a custom theme and a bunch of plugins that mess with the WP Dashboard" approach seem reasonable by comparison.
@dec23k @jonny @siim it kind of is.
@davey_cakes @jonny @siim
I'm talking about the WP plugins that deliberately make it impossible for an admin login to do any kind of site admin work from inside WP.
They could be used as a guard rail to protect the Dashboard against clumsy users, but are more commonly used by website 'developers' who want to give themselves an easy lock-in while at the same time handing their customer a "full admin" login. At least that's the case with all the ones that I have uninstalled.
@dec23k @jonny @siim I've been the second developer along to those once or twice 🙈
@jonny @siim yeah, LLMs really seem to repeat popular mistakes. But in naive way.

@jonny

I hope they plan to pay extremely well, because this one would looks like Hell to me.
