vibe coders have discovered "coding"

@jonny I was helping someone who had vibed their way to nearly having a web and mobile app ready.

There were some omissions that were obvious to me and I was helping them prompt their way to accuracy. At one point I did say "I can just write this bit" but they said "But I won't have you every day"

Anyway the next day I was meant to help them it completely lost the mobile app code so I told them to give me a shout when they got it to the same stage again.

@jonny and in fairness this person could afford the vibe stuff. They couldn't afford me for the same job, but it seems like such a false promise and they're losing their marbles.

That's the spot where people need to realize that things have a cost and you can't really dodge it if you want your shi# to be of some quality.
We can vibe, but then expect to be garbage in general.

@siim @jonny yeah, it's not quite a sweet spot between an off-the-shelf solution and custom dev yet.

And I wouldn't completely object to such a sweet spot, if it existed.

But business critical stuff and dice rolling is a bad match.

Fart out a marketing site by all means...

I would prefer it if programmers recognized the patterns that got us to this point where this is the only way to make a website now - and LLMs only deepen those patterns of hyperverbose, tech heavy deployments - and saw it as their responsibility to design for low resource, low knowledge circumstances.

This makes the old "WordPress but with a custom theme and a bunch of plugins that mess with the WP Dashboard" approach seem reasonable by comparison.
@dec23k @jonny @siim it kind of is.
@davey_cakes @jonny @siim
I'm talking about the WP plugins that deliberately make it impossible for an admin login to do any kind of site admin work from inside WP.
They could be used as a guard rail to protect the Dashboard against clumsy users, but are more commonly used by website 'developers' who want to give themselves an easy lock-in while at the same time handing their customer a "full admin" login. At least that's the case with all the ones that I have uninstalled.
@dec23k @jonny @siim I've been the second developer along to those once or twice 🙈
