@stux I don't know enough about animal behavior to be sure I'm not anthropomorphizing the elephant's behavior, but I'm choosing to call what I see there empathy.
It is unlikely that even if managing to survive for the coming millennia, elephants will evolve to manipulate tools the way current humans can.
But, if they already have an intelligence that allows for empathy, how much more *Techne* do they actually need?

Dolphins: Incredible athletes. All the fish they can eat.
BillUntil humans kill them all with rising water temperatures.
Urban Hermit@danjewett @stux yeah, that is 100% empathy, in a deeply undeniable way. And shame on the zoo keepers for not making sure there was a gradual slope out.
There was empathy and intelligence. I would say there was specific care taken to NOT injure a smaller animal in the process.
