@stux Won't be the worst thing if humans don't make it.

@stux I don't know enough about animal behavior to be sure I'm not anthropomorphizing the elephant's behavior, but I'm choosing to call what I see there empathy.

It is unlikely that even if managing to survive for the coming millennia, elephants will evolve to manipulate tools the way current humans can.

But, if they already have an intelligence that allows for empathy, how much more *Techne* do they actually need?

@stux Humans: incredible manipulation of wealth and technology. High anxiety.

Dolphins: Incredible athletes. All the fish they can eat.

@danjewett @stux

Until humans kill them all with rising water temperatures.

@danjewett @stux yeah, that is 100% empathy, in a deeply undeniable way. And shame on the zoo keepers for not making sure there was a gradual slope out.

There was empathy and intelligence. I would say there was specific care taken to NOT injure a smaller animal in the process.

@Urban_Hermit @danjewett @stux There was an obvious care not to use more strength than needed.

@stux

This is so heartwarming, kindness is everywhere. The determination to want to help 💗💗💗

I never understood why people want to kill so many other species, and that they don't realise they can think, play, have fun, invent games, have a bad mood, have a crazy zoomies mood, et cetera. We, other animals included, are all intelligent enough to do these things, which, I always thought, implies we're creatures with feelings who deserve to live.

@pascaline @stux
Yes, we have to keep reminding people and scientists especially (I’m a budding scientist so I hope to help create this change too!) about this fact. IT IS NOT anthropomorphizing , it is actually looking and seeing what is actually happening in the world 🩷🌎🌍🌏🩷 Jane Goodall has it right.

@em_and_future_cats

Oh yes, I so remember when humans told me I was anthropomorphising. I would say that it's weird and even haughty to think other animals cannot have the same, or similar feelings and qualities. It's a long time ago but this is still going on, sadly, so if you can help that would be great! 💗

@stux

@pascaline @stux
I just took an “animal behavior class” this past semester and it drove me literally nuts when they kept “insisting” that animals can’t sense fear etc etc. and that the correct way to describe it is “elevated level of cortisol or adrenaline” which is definitely NOT what we describe when we diagnose humans. So yeah, I will continue to push for reform when it comes to scientific definitions and research!

@em_and_future_cats

It's sickening & anthropocentric pontification from a pedestal, and drives me nuts too. I feel so sad for all the animals. They also use cats and dogs. Beagles are among the favourite dogs for lab experiments because they are 'too sweet' to protest and have a high pain tolerance. Reading about this years ago made me sick.
There is an adoption organisation here for lab beagles. They require humans with a lot of patience & love to resocialise.

Awww poor babies! 😿
Thank you for sharing 🩷
I will keep this for when I’m able to adopt a doggie 🩷 (And yes I will be extra sure of taking care of them WELL before I adopt 🩷)

I was sad when I heard about it, but there are good people like you to give them a forever home 😊

That #Elephpant saving the small #Impala in the water is proof they are thinking, like ALL animals

But, this reminds me of the "intelligent" way #Kangaroos like to grab an attacking dog and with one arm, choke it and kill the dog

Also, angry male #Zebras will sometimes drown young Zebras of a future new mate, similar to male #Lions

@stux OMG. I will never eat elephant again
@stux
Amazing. God I adore elephants!!

@stux

Whenever I see a video like this, I hope it's not staged.

@stux elephants are too good for this world....

@stux

Very cool 👍 😢

@stux I can't help it. Every time I see a heffalump, I hear the "Pachyderm Parade" song from the film Jungle Book :-)

@stux

Wonderful.

I wish humans were as kind as that to all peoples.

@stux fucking elephants have more empathy than conservatives...

@stux thanks, I needed that.
@stux Yay, helpy elephant!
@stux Awww. This is completely different than the horror I just saw (Ukrane).
@stux I like how it goes over afterward and checks in with it.
@stux elephants find other species cute asf with their little noses. arent they wonderful.
@stux “Not the horns, bro, NOT THE HORNS!”
@stux Sometimes, they also only call for help and let the humans do this:

Watch As Elephant Calls for Humans To Help To Save Drowning Antelope

The Asian elephant can be seen pacing around the pool and trumpeting, calling for help, as the antelope struggles to stay afloat.

Kinda chiropractor!

@stux In a related way, is it creepy if I just stand at the foot of the subway stairs and offer to carry suitcases all day long for free ? Specifically thinking about line 6 at Montparnasse-Bienvenüe. I never fail to see people in need of a lift but don't know how weird that would be, giving it for everyone.
