if you think what certain payment processors are doing with Steam and itch.io is wrong, might it suggest reporting those processors for abusing their market powers to the respective authorities in your country? Japan has already started an investigation, the more countries follow the better

side note it is absolutely wild that an official austrian government homepage uses a random third party hoster and a random third party cookie banner

what the fuck

@aurora I mean I'm with you on the cookie banner. government not physically hosting their own shit is normal tho, at every level right up to the federal, it's no different in Germany

@darkphoenix
Well at least in Germany the host isn't being directly exposed as federal pages are hosted by ITZBund, a pblic agency. Sure they might contract out servers instead of running their own but the stuff is at least behind their own AS so it's hard to tell. I would hope some more sensitive stuff runs internally.

Same for my federal state Saxony where sites are handled by the "Staatsbetrieb Saechsische Informatik Dienste" (with their own AS)
@aurora

@the_moep @aurora ITZBund is increasingly grasping at more federal sites, but I can tell you for a fact that several sites, including those of the Bundestag and several ministries, are hosted by external companies in their own ASNs.
@the_moep @aurora have a poke at bmu.de, bmv.de, bundestag.de, and bundesregierung.de for a taste if you don't believe me :p
(specifically, check the nameservers, as well as the whois on the actual IPs in the A records)
@aurora I agree, wtf, how is it not an EU law that all government websites must use only government or at the very least same-member-state (or for union websites, EU) infrastracture
@aurora As someone from Austria I have to say that I'm not even surprised by this...
Also thanks for the link. <3
@aurora (what are they doing? Being anti gay sex again?)
@tay @aurora being "American puritanism applies in the whole world"
@tay @aurora Apparently itch.io has delisted all NSFW content from search and discovery, allegedly because payment processors started pressuring them.
Download the latest indie games

itch.io is a simple way to find, download and distribute indie games online. Whether you're a developer looking to upload your game or just someone looking for something new to play itch.io has you covered.

itch.io
@arina-artemis @aurora @tay ...because itch.io had nsfw games containing rape, incest, and minors, and a group of people lobbied for payment processors to pressure steam and itch
allie 🌺 (@username@tech.lgbt)

can y'all read the campaign that the itch.io blogpost links to before posting about it?

petitioning payment processors to take action against both steam and itch because their review process has let games featuring rape, incest, and minors (the example that itch gave is entirely about two of the three). for once i agree with what the payment processors are doing?

i don't like how unclear the itch announcement is. at first i thought they were removing all nsfw games. but i don't think that's true.

LGBTQIA+ and Tech
@username @aurora @tay So… Why not report the game to itch itself? Why go to friggin MasterCard and Visa? Why go nuclear?
@arina-artemis because the problem wasn't a specific game (well, that was also a problem), but itch.io not having good moderation: they should really be checking the content of nsfw games before listing them.
@username This is ridiculous. No other platform is required to pre-moderate content.
@username Anyway, I think you’re being deliberately obtuse, not arguing in good faith and supporting anti-abortionist prudes, so I’m going to block you. Ta-ta!

@arina-artemis Itch have honestly been exemplary in their handling of reports when it comes to legality, speaking as someone with some knowledge of the industry.

This @ username person seems to specifically dislike certain kinds of content, which is their prerogative, and wish to agitate that everyone else's access to art and entertainment be dependant on their moral standards, legality be damned.

The fuck are they even doing around here.
I am 100% out of patience with this shit.
Some of us are trying to earn a living off our bodies.

@username to you incest is icky, to someone else it's trans people. we know what the terfs and neonazis running campaigns like this are after, and it's not sensible content moderation.

payment processors' lists of prohibited stuff contain all of "adult content", not just "the most controversial fetishes".

don't be an agent of the enemy.

@aurora The big question is which payment processors are responsible?

At least itch.io didn't mention which ones are to blame...

Do you have any reliable source that mentions names?

@aurora How would I even know who the payment processor is?
@aurora And that point, why dont Itch.io and Steam just switch their payment processor?

@nyovaya @aurora "just"

at the top of the chain there is always fucking Mastercard and Visa.

you can't switch very well.

@nyovaya

Because most of us pay with cards (credit / debit), the (biggest) 2 issuers of said cards are Visa and Master.
If those 2 say they won't be processing payments, you have probably no other way to get payments from 90% of your audience.

You might use some other ways of paying, but it's mostly done through payment card, therefore we are back at those 2 f*** companies.
You could transfer money to other way of payment, but then you have to add step to your purchase and even this makes lot of people go away and don't bother.

Also those other ways of payment might get under same pressure not to process payments for some stuff, because they might loose possibility people will transfer money from Visa/Master cards to this other payment processors.

Sorry, it's complicated, I hope I made it little bit clearer?

@aurora

@aurora does that one happen to know what the equivalent legislative body for Switzerland is?
@memdmp first guess would be
https://www.weko.admin.ch/ but no idea about swiss stuff lol
Wettbewerbskommission

@aurora ty - will look into it further and probably report something
@aurora Given Germany's track record on porn issues (like the DLSite geoblock), I have little hope anything good is going to come from bringing our government into this.
@ratsnakegames thank you so much for bringing this up 🥲 i'm just watching this unfold internationally and think, really happy for you guys! please fight the fight guys! i'm pretty sure i'm located in a lost cause
@aurora Unfortunately, being in the U.S., I don't have a government I can report them to but I appreciate the information you're sharing. Thanks for highlighting a pressure point folks in those countries can access!
@EveHasWords well, in theory https://www.justice.gov/atr/webform/submit-your-antitrust-report-online would be the right place to do that, but yea, it doesn't think that the current "government" cares much
Submit Your Antitrust Report Online

@aurora Yeah, that would be very much a case of reporting the foxes in the chicken coop ... to the foxes in the chicken coop.
@aurora @becomethewaifu I don't suppose you'd know of a good place to read about Japan's investigation? I hadn't heard of it at all prior.
