When I was a kid, I couldn't wait to be an adult because I imagined that adulthood would be a time when no one would interrupt me when I was trying to read.

If I could go back in time, I would tell that little girl she has never been more wrong about anything in her life.

@evacide this for me.
@stinerman @evacide this for me (but books)

@bnut @stinerman @evacide

Why is "FOOD" exclusive of all the other activities?
It should be vertical, on the right- a shared activity that can be done simultaneously with the others .

@stinerman @evacide Or more like "but you won't have the reaction time or finger movement coordination skills required to play many of them".

@tml @stinerman @evacide

Games these days feel like work...

@pete I've been playing old NES games. They're difficult but they can be picked up and played at a moment's notice. No more "if I want to play this, I have to play for at least 2 hours to get anything done."

@tml @evacide

@tml I knew I was getting old when I didn't have the finger dexterity to play Guitar Hero on anything but the easiest level.

@evacide

@stinerman @evacide Or you will have the time. But you won't have the energy. 🥲

@evacide

I feel overwhelmed by trying to deal with my day to day life, so I wondered if "silent retreats" was thing that existed.

I found one that alternates between eating (in silence), yoga or mediatation, and scheduled "Non-doing Period"

I'm currently wondering how effective something like that would be as a vacation from being an adult with too many responsibilities.

@alienghic @evacide

Silent retreats absolutely do exist, under that exact term and pretty much under that same description. I find them essential for my well-being and at the bare minimum, my Sundays are usually spent in peace and rest.

@illumniscate

having no experience with this, what is it like? when people show up do the just say hi and then be quiet?

Do some people show up for the meals and then go find someplace comfy to sit and read?

@alienghic

I usually just do it with my partner but when it's with a group of other people, there is a setting of rules, expectations & schedule (usually known ahead of time too) & then it's a few days spent in general silence (a lot of meditation, but verbal communication for practically needs obviously exists), with remote spaces available for quiet talking.

I haven't been at organised reading retreats yet!

@illumniscate The thing that tempted me by an organized retreat is they're also dealing with the meals, which is something I usually am stuck doing

@evacide So much this. I love reading. And when I'm reading, my focus is there. If someone interrupts that, I am pissed off. But now I have to *act* as if I'm not, be polite, and listen to whatever drivel they thought was important enough to ruin the critical moment in the story. A moment that you can *never* get back.

"It's just a book." Argh! In a better timeline, I'd turn and burn them to ashes with my laser eyes.

@agreeable_landfall @evacide ALL RIGHT, MY BEAUTIFUL BESTIES.

EVERYBODY! Toes on the line at the ends of your bunks.

Now LISTEN CAREFULLY, and recite after me:

"I DESERVE TIME TO MYSELF"

"idesrelvtmtomyse-"

I can't hear you, LOUDER!

"I deserve time to myse-"

The FUCK are you, MICE?! LOUDER!

"I deserve time to myself!"

Wow, you almost sounded like you meant it! LOUDER!!

"I DESERVE TIME TO MYSELF!"

You're DAMN RIGHT you do! At ease. Read your GODDAMN FUCKING BOOKS, soldiers

@TeflonTrout @agreeable_landfall @evacide Also, there are glorious things called Silent Book Clubs! Where you meet with other people, chitchat about your current read for a few minutes, then settle in for a silent hour of uninterrupted reading!

I recently found one in my city and have attended my first meeting. It was delightful. I highly recommend searching online to see if there's one in your respective cities. And if there isn't, maybe start one! 😊🤘🖖

@courtcan I had not head of silent book clubs until my daughter attended one this week.

@evacide several months ago one of my kids accompanied me to the grocery. “$200 for two bags??? I don’t ever want to be an adult!”

I found that trip to be more educational than the single day at school. Perhaps because he likely did not pay attention in school

@evacide what’s worse is we interrupt ourselves with devices.

Of course, I do this as well because I don’t have a physical Langenscheidt dictionary here, and looking words up on the phone is just as easy.

@evacide
Also: Audio books are not reading and may be interrupted freely at any time and any number of times.
@evacide I have time to read, much more than I had when I was a minor. Would say it's an upgrade.
@evacide
YES! But also? Librarians are not in their roles because they "get to read" etc...
@evacide Plot Twist: It’s my own kids interrupting my reading time.

@evacide That’s not a problem my daughter has. Nobody interrupt her when she’s reading.

Sorry, I missed a word. Nobody *can* interrupt her when she’s reading.

Just this morning:

– Would your like to have breakfast?
– Yes.
– Would you like toast or cereals?
