Mentioning an account is also known as @-ing because you type @ and then the name of the account. It's also known as tagging a person.

I've done a full guide all about mentions on Mastodon and the wider Fediverse:

Hopefully this answers all the questions people have about this topic. Let me know if I've missed something 🙂

@FediTips A lot of people I know also call it pinging, I think they got that term from Discord, so if someone who's regularly on Discord gets a mention on Mastodon, they say that they got pinged, or who pinged me? Just thought I'd also share that, as its another common term for a mention. I have at times used the term ping on Mastodon lol.

@alexchapman
I've used that term long before discord was a thing 😅

Trying to figure out if that makes me old. Where I spent the majority of my "childhood" the cell network worked as "caller pays" for the fees. So if you didn't have credits on your SIM, you'd send a "missed call" to the other person and if they could cover the cost they'd call you back. This was also known as "pinging".

And then, of course, the simple nettools ping utility to see if a device is responsive on a network.

I'm not sure but I think the original original use of pinging as a verb was on submarines where they sent out a sonar "ping" to see if anything was nearby? It actually sounded like a ping.

@FediTips @h3mmy Oh right, I just know that most of my friends associate the term pinging to being mentioned in a message/post.
@FediTips @h3mmy @alexchapman me, twitching in IRC style Ping? Pong! 🫣

Oh I remember that too! To make sure you're connected to the channel properly. Although some would kick me for doing it more than twice in a row
