OK Fedi-hive-mind… am I missing out here due to using a ridiculously outdated app, or is this what linked BlueSky posts look like to everyone: just a hyperlinked URL? If this is what it is for everyone here; is this because BlueSky isn’t playing nice, or because Mastodon development isn’t keeping up?
@feditips

UPDATE: after a few comments and some backtracking… what I’m looking at is a Bsky quotepost by a Bridgy account, and the quotepost is reduced to a URL, I suspect, because the OP account is not bridged.

NOW I’m curious if the quotepost would show through if the OP was a bridged account?

@DavidM_yeg Bluesky quote posts have been showing up as links, yes, same as quote posts from other Fedi software. However, the latest Mastodon versions have a new quote post support to display nested posts from other servers, and I'm sure I've seen some bridgy posts recently that show up with that styling. Not sure what it was about that post that didn't create a quote (it's not just your app, I found it on the web & am only seeing the link).

As for why there isn't even a link preview, I'm not sure: there is OpenGraph metadata on the original HTML page, but the bluesky server could be blocking the mastodon ones from fetching it?

@AmeliasBrain @DavidM_yeg

That’s the kind of technical explanation, I couldn’t even begin to offer. Thank you, Amelia. I’m just beginning to scratch the surface of understanding how the worlds can intersect, but I find it interesting. 🙂

@AmeliasBrain

The post I saw wasn’t a bridgy post, just straight up from bsky… I’ll keep my eye open for how bridgy posts look

@AmeliasBrain

Ah, I’ve looked back, and the post is a bluesky post from a bridged account referencing a bluesky post by an unbridged account.

(as an aside… evidence that the bridge works well enough that I’m often not aware of it)

@DavidM_yeg Oh, that makes sense that the Bridgy service can only do a "proper" ActivityPub quote post if it has a bridged representation of both posts.

@AmeliasBrain @DavidM_yeg for now the proper quote posts are also pretty much limited only to people quoting themselves because the piece of the puzzle that authorizes quoting someone else is not in place.

This issue is the one to track when it comes to the Bluesky bridge gaining the functionality for one bridged user to quote another: https://github.com/snarfed/bridgy-fed/issues/1956

Please add support for FEP-044f quote post authorisations · Issue #1956 · snarfed/bridgy-fed

Mastodon added support for ingesting quote posts from other servers based on FEP-044f in mastodon/mastodon#34370. With that change, it seems to already recognise the quoteUrl property bridgy-fed is...

@DavidM_yeg

I can’t speak to the development question, but I can add this: I access Mastodon using a web browser on all my devices, and this is what Bluesky links look like to me too. Just a hyperlink. If I’m interested, based on the comments by the OP, I click through.

I also follow the bridgy bot here, and that gives me the ability to have two way communication with bridged accounts, even though I don’t have a bsky account. So Laffy can see my comments on both platforms, for example.

@KimberlyN

OK, then at least it’s not just because I’m lazy and haven’t found a new app after the developer gave up support on this one 2-3 years ago 🤦‍♂️

I’m quite able and often do click through, and I do follow bridgy which is helpful, and also have a BlueSky account I mostly don’t use just to facilitate popping over to see something (or to tell people over there to bridge their accounts if I care enough), but it makes me grumble at the failure of interoperability, and I’m curious where the ball gets dropped: is it in the queue on the Masto dev side (I’m patient) or is BlueSky putting up a wall?

@DavidM_yeg

Yeah, it’s an interesting question to explore. The two worlds have the potential to be more seamlessly connected than they are now…so what are the issues?

I used the Ice Cubes app on my phone for a while, but preferred just using the web interface. We have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to connectivity apps on the Fediverse, but that can be confusing too. 🤷🏼‍♀️

@DavidM_yeg it's a bluesky post with a quote, the person who posted it is using bridgy fed but the one that they're quoting isn't so it just puts a link there instead
