I'm on the verge of taking a terrifying step (well, terrifying for me).

I think I'm moving Mastodon instances. (Though *kinda* considering having 2 accounts🤷🏻‍♀️)

✨ Would LOVE to hear anyone's experience w/migrating (or choosing to keep 2 separate accounts) #AskFedi

In classic #ActuallyAutistic fashion, change terrifies me.

In classic Emily fashion, I'm angsty about losing my post history & the migration logistics.

@EmilyMoranBarwick @actuallyautistic The technical part of moving has been nicely compiled by @FediTips in a comprehensive tutorial. Used it twice, no glitches. Given your new instance had been deliberately chosen on behalf of the community it congegrates, your experience likely only gets better.

If you want to use the guide it's at https://fedi.tips/transferring-your-mastodon-account-to-another-server

There are a lot of steps but each step should be pretty straightforward.

Also, as long as you don't delete your old account you can try again if something doesn't work. And if you change your mind after the transfer, you can even go back to the old account if you want to.

Having two accounts is also a good way of dipping your toe in the water, you can transfer from one account to another at any time.

An unofficial guide to using Mastodon and the Fediverse

@FediTips I’ve gone through the guide a few times. I still have a few questions (if you’re open to them):

1. Even if I do the full migration, when people @ mention me, it seems both accounts will pop up as options. I’m wondering how to not have that be confusing as to which one they should select?

2. Once I do the migration people can still comment on old posts. But I’m assuming I can only reply as my new account?

Thank you!

@EmilyMoranBarwick

1. Once you've done the transfer fully, your account on the old server should start redirecting people to your new account. When this happens, it will (possibly gradually) stop showing up in suggestions and people will only see your new account suggested.

2. As long as you don't delete it, you can still go back to your old account and reply from there, but you would have to switch off the redirect and then switch it back on again.

@FediTips thank you so much!

Also, the guide said that if people click your username on old posts it will redirect them to your new account. I did a test with two dummy accounts last night and migrated one to the other.

But on the “original” account, when I click the username in the old posts, it still goes to the original profile. Is that the expected behavior? I thought it would take me to the new account?

@EmilyMoranBarwick

What are you using to view the old profile? Some apps don't show the redirect unfortunately 😞

If you view it through the web interface or most apps the profile should show a redirect message with your new account.

@FediTips but I guess the way the guide was written, I thought if you clicked the profile name on a post it would actually just take you to the new profile, not the old one with a redirect message.

@EmilyMoranBarwick

Ahhh that's a good point, thank you

I'll try to rewrite it so it's clearer, and I also ought to mention that some apps don't show the redirect.

By the way it's not just the message, it also prevents people following the old account.
