ChatGPT and other AI services are basically killing @Iconfactory and I'm not exaggerating or being hyperbolical.

First Twitter/Elon killed our main app revenue that kept the lights on around here, then generative AI exploded to land a final blow to design revenue.

Tapestry's Kickstarter was a bit of a hail mary, but people aren't subscribing in great enough numbers to replace Twitterrific revenue and that combined with the sudden free-falling design revenue might just be the end of us.
I know nothing I say is going to get anyone to stop using ChatGPT and generating a new app icon in 5 minutes for the app that you also had ChatGPT write for you in a few hours, but I'm not sure what the rest of us are supposed to do about making enough money to, ya know, live.
I think perhaps because @Iconfactory design is quite good people have this impression that we're sitting here on a pile of money or something and some huge powerhouse - nope. We've been barely making it since Elon/Twitter. There's only 6 of us and there's no war chest.

@bigzaphod @Iconfactory I don’t know what to say except that several years ago I paid Iconfactory to design an icon for my app and, while it felt expensive at the time, the design process was great and I was incredibly happy with the result. Money well spent.

I’ve been a huge Iconfactory fan since the 90s. I hope to remain so for a long time to come. ❤️

@jeff @bigzaphod @Iconfactory As an app consumer, I’ll add that a good icon can help decide if I am going to buy an app or not. Between two apps of roughly the same quality, I’ll always go with the one with the better icon. And that better icon is never going to be one designed by ChatGPT.

@jeff @bigzaphod @Iconfactory

My new website for Tap Forms Pro was designed by The Iconfactory. They did an amazing job.

And none of my app icons were or will be AI generated.

@tapforms @jeff @bigzaphod @Iconfactory They do websites too? I was really admiring it the other day, it’s functional and beautiful.
@bigzaphod @Iconfactory I'm now writing an email to inquire about an icon design!!1
@ctietze @bigzaphod @Iconfactory actually same. I'm really not sure I can afford it, can you DM me with rough costs?
@bens @ctietze @Iconfactory I forwarded this to the person who takes care of sales stuff - she should get back to you with some kind of number. I don't actually know any of our ballpark prices, tbh, as I've never been involved in that part of things.
@bigzaphod @[email protected] Thats rough - wish we had design work to put your way. As a software agency I constantly wonder if we’re going to be OK, or if we’re just a few months behind the curve.

@bigzaphod you forgot to mention that Apple is coming out with a suite of operating systems where this is an acceptable icon.

(In short, If we want the @Iconfactory to survive buy Tapestries.)

@Eggfreckles @bigzaphod @Iconfactory some (many) of these new macOS icons are just appalling. Minimal effort rubbish honestly.
@Eggfreckles @bigzaphod @Iconfactory Jesus, does this look horrible. No pride in work anymore.
@flq @Eggfreckles @bigzaphod @Iconfactory Just a few hours ago I was posting about another example of Apple seeming to have no pride in their work: https://hachyderm.io/@jeremy_list/114855010120670693
Jeremy List (@[email protected])

When I orient my phone to put the screen into landscape mode it ends up displaying stuff the right way up but the rotation animation is in the wrong direction. The impact on usability is very minor but it's also such an obvious bug that it's hard to reconcile with my memories of Apple products from decades ago!

@bigzaphod @Iconfactory So sorry to hear this. If I had work for you all, I’d happily hire you. With the rapid explosion of AI slop, it’s becoming easier and easier to notice the difference a human touch makes, and there’s a future I can see that in a few years we’ll all be desperate for it in our designs. I happily backed Iconfactory in the past and am sad to hear that it’s going this way :-(

@bigzaphod There are a handful of high profile examples that make people think most indies/small co’s are making lots of money, but the reality is most of us are making just enough to get by doing something we love — or have some other job to sustain us.

For what it's worth, I backed Tapestry (is there a way to subscribe while being a backer?), subscribe to Wallaroo, and recently bought xScope again (for some reason I had the app store version)

@montyhayter ❤️

One way to subscribe as a backer is to go to Settings / Advanced Settings / Reset Unlock which basically clears out the backer flag. Then you can sub in the usual way and re-unlock backer via that URL and get the bonus icons, too.

@bigzaphod Will I still have access to the TestFlight if I do that? No biggie if I don’t, love Tapestry and will support you guys any way I can.
@miked1112 yeah - it'll stay available in the TestFlight app, so you can download the App Store version of Tapestry, subscribe from there, and then use TestFlight to reinstall the TestFlight version over top of the App Store version and continue to using that one.

@bigzaphod I would actually love to get some design work done, but honestly I'm facing my own headwinds that make viability beyond a year out questionable, so I can't really afford to.

I need to diversify, but so many ideas I would otherwise pursue are just as vulnerable. Which sucks, because at this point I'm probably unhireable — not that it matters, I'd hate going back to a corporate job.

@montyhayter similar here, tbh - we'd love to sit down and come up with more ideas but... there's no headroom for it. Tapestry was it, basically. It was the shot. And we didn't expect designs services to vanish basically overnight.
@bigzaphod surprised there’s not a big demand for glass layered icons for all the 26s.
@bigzaphod @Iconfactory It saddens me to no end reading this. I wish more people would get and use your apps, not only Tapestry but all of them! They’re great, and the design is truely something an AI could never come close to. You understand how people think, what they want and what works. An LLM could never do this - and I really hope that people will realise this, and soon! Creating stuff NEEDS great designers, artists, and devs!
@bigzaphod @Iconfactory I’m really sorry to hear this. Over the years I’ve noodled with a few app ideas, and frankly I’ve always been excited to maybe one day get a project to a spot where I was worthy of engaging you all for an icon!

@bigzaphod @Iconfactory

I’m very sorry to hear Iconfactory is struggling. I’ve been a big fan for decades. Not all products are hits. A Twitteriffic for Mastodon would likely do well though.

My opinion? The company should consider joining @panic - the two companies align very well. cc @cabel @chockenberry

@cdevroe @bigzaphod @Iconfactory @panic @cabel @chockenberry lots of shared DNA here. I would also love seeing the two of you join forces in some capacity.

@bigzaphod @Iconfactory I am sorry to hear this, and I understand the frustration. I was hoping to do an ad in Tapestry soon, but a combination of tariffs and ‘AI’ is affecting the bigger clients to a degree that their cashflow problems are becoming my cashflow problems 😞

Fingers crossed for improvements in the near future! 🙏🏻

P.S.: Can we still expect a Mac version of Tapestry in the foreseeable future?

@mejofi @Iconfactory yeah, been working on a more mac-friendly version.
@bigzaphod @Iconfactory do you think the new glass icons for iOS will help you out? I’m not sure how good AI will be at generating those just yet.
@bigzaphod @Iconfactory It would be an honor to have an icon created by you – the mere pedigree is enough
@bigzaphod I'm sorry you have to experience this. I love xScope and will now look into Tapestry. I didn't had a use case for this but I need to support my iOS dev fellows.

@bigzaphod I completely understand your predicament.

As a wannabe developer, I'm almost certainly going to go to ChatGPT to generate an app icon for my bound-to-fail app.

However at the same time, I want products like Iconfactory to be successful.

I don't really know the answer, but the answer has to be something related to adding services to your product that AI can't - for example, build into your app am online P2P rating system, so users can vote for which is your best icon?

@bigzaphod and who will provide the the training data for the next generation of AI to steel? Will we be locked into the design trends of the 2010s forever?
@david yeah, no kidding. I don't think the people pushing this stuff care, unfortunately.
@bigzaphod This whole thing sucks. I don’t know what to say other than good luck in the future and I hope something breaks the right way for you and Iconfactory.
@bigzaphod Also, if you don’t need an icon but need publicity, advertising in Tapestry is a nice option. (Note to self)
@bigzaphod I’m really sorry. If it’s any consolation Tapestry is my #1 feed consumption app now; it’s just outstanding!
@bigzaphod I hate these copyright infringing machines with all my heart because I know it does this to good people. I did the least I could do by subscribing (and buying ollie and capybara shirts, so maybe it wasn't the least?).
@bigzaphod I’m sure it’s little consolation but Tapestry is literally my most used app. I used it to debug a podcast feed at work not even 30 minutes ago. Super appreciate you guys!
