Hey Mastodon folks, I'm looking for a (preferably European) alternative to Google Photos. Mainly cloud backup from my phone (Android) and organization, maybe some private photo/album sharing, but not an image-based social media app as such. Free or reasonably priced. Any recommendations? #photobackup #europeanalternatives #recommendations

Thanks, I'll have to check these out! I'm currently paying for Google Photos, so I'm certainly open to paying for a better option instead. I do use Proton Drive for general file backup - I'll have to see how it works for photos.

One thing I like about Google is that photos can easily be transmitted via Google Home/Chromecast to be shown as a screensaver or our TV. It would be nice to continue with a similar functionality, but it's not a deal-breaker.

Wow, I was offline for a while, and so many great alternatives have come up! Thank you everybody for contributing to this thread 😊
@ssilvonen MEGA Cloud Storage seems to have both zero knowledge storage and 20 GB for free. It's not true open source but the source code is public. https://mega.io/storage

@ssilvonen I recently transferred all my photos from Gphoto to Pixelunion.eu. Uploading the takeout zips with the command line tool was a little bit complicated, but finally worked fine and I got all my albums transferred as well.
It's a hosted #immich service, everything works as it should and their customer service answers queries.
@kallekn Thank you, I will check this option out too!
@ssilvonen
Nextcloud syncs your photos automatically from your phone. It can be selfhosted but there are also managed hosting providers around.

I use the Synology System. Cause of having a backup onSide and mainly comfortable sync.
Putting all my fotos in a cloud (server from other people) is not the way to go IMHO.
If selfhosting is not an option, Buy a used NAS with affordable diskdrives and make them available to the internet.
@ssilvonen i really like immich as a software, but it doesn't look like there are any service providers that will host it for you :/

@ssilvonen I use immich, which is an absolute gamechanger. It can be self-hosted and is open source, but there are hosted (managed) instances available.

@ssilvonen it does support casting as well.
@ssilvonen my vote would go to Photoprism, on the basis that it's very good: https://www.photoprism.app/
@ssilvonen You could try Nextcloud with the Memories app.
@ssilvonen
@ente is probably the best alternative.

I think Proton now has a way of making photo albums on their secure cloud/drive.

I recently found Pixel Union. Platform that host Immich in Europe. It has very similar features to Google Photo.

@ssilvonen Proton Drive now also features some kind of storsage specifically for photos. Haven’t looked into it yet though.
@ssilvonen I have heard good things about @ente although I have only briefly tried it myself.
@ssilvonen The Memories app on Nextcloud is excellent.
