Wildfires in Europe are surging, but we are ready.

How?

🚒 22 firefighting airplanes & 4 helicopters, stationed in 10 EU countries, are on standby
👨🏽‍🚒 Firefighters positioned in high-risk areas - almost 650 firefighters from 14 countries deployed to 🇫🇷 🇬🇷 🇵🇹 🇪🇸 to support local forces
📍 Experts monitoring risks 24/7

Since January 2025, the EU has had:

🔥 1,118 fires
🧯 Nearly 214 ha burnt

@EUCommission
glad to hear the #EU is ready to fight fires. But you wouldn't really need to be that ready if you'd do more to protect the #climate
@EUCommission you are not ready. what did eu do to stop the ongoing climate crisis: very much nothing, as even futher production of combustion cars seems to be debatable.

@EUCommission

'Nearly 214 ha burnt' -> please correct the error. The burnt area is one thousand times that number...

The EU isn't ready.
Of course, cooperation is a good thing. But please compare these numbers with the new, inflated military budgets. What are we even talking about? A single squad of F-35 shovels more into the US military industry than the entire shared EU firefighter infrastructure.

And meanwhile, the environmental policies continue being diluted, the fight against climate change is scaled back, and the largest parts of the funds are just channeled into shiny industry projects with no benefit at best and horrible consequences at most (CCS, nuclear, gas, fossil fuel subsidies, car-centered infrastructure...).
The solutions are known: #degrowth, #agroecology, #SustainableMobility, #OpenSource...

It is so sad that we are wasting this precious window of opportunity where we have still administrative capacity and some control over where we are heading.

@EUCommission What are you doing for wildfire prevention?
@EUCommission now only if you were ready to **not** do deals with literal fascists to increase the number of fires, that would be great.
@EUCommission why does it sound like the🔥💦 is a showoff. Prevention they say is better than cure
@EUCommission
In European English, we don’t say „airplane“ – we say „aircraft“, „aeroplane“ or „plane“ (from formal to informal).
@EUCommission proof of readiness is proportional to remedy. God bless EU
@EUCommission Living in a high risk area, I can say the EU efforts are helping considerably these last years.
@EUCommission my sincere compliments and respect to the pilots who fly firefighting planes.
Flying firefighting planes is one of the most dangerous things any pilot can do. This is not for a faint of heart.
Why?
You fly very low
You fly in mountainous terrain
Your instruments are almost useless
Your visual is close to 0
And on top of that it’s hot. Aeroplane engines have never been designed to fly through fires or hot smoke.
