Every. Cloud. Device. Ever.

"After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to end technical support for older Wemo products, effective January 31, 2026. [...] Any features that rely on cloud connectivity, including remote access and voice assistant integrations, will no longer work."

Luckily Home Assistant is able to control Wemo devices locally allowing our users to continue controlling their Wemo devices, including remotely or using voice assistants.
@balloob But do these devices require first connecting to Belkin's cloud services before local connection can be enabled?
@iFixit good question! I don’t know how their WiFi onboarding works.
@balloob @iFixit Most require their app and a bluetooth local connection to get things going. Glad I bailed out on their gear.
@balloob
Uh oh. Sounds like I'll have to actually get a container spun up for my first-gen Wemo smart plug. Not that I use it much anyway, but I've been wanting to get self-hosted smart devices to work anyway, so... Whee!
@balloob this, my semi switches have been blocked from reaching the internet immediately after I set them up
@balloob 'Devices configured with Apple HomeKit before this date will continue to function via HomeKit local control without requiring #Wemo cloud services or app.'
#belkin
@balloob do you think HA local control will still work? I just wrote about using HomeKit to rescue my Wemo devices.
@balloob@fosstodon.org I haven’t bought any corporate home automation device in years because of this. They are the worst example of planned obsolescence. Every single one stopped working after a while.

Tasmota, ESPHome + HomeAssistant for life ! (Literally, I expect these to last as long as me).
@balloob yup… if it doesn’t have direct control using HomeKit and/or homeassistant… I’m not buying
@balloob
Stop Killing Games' underlying concept should really be extended to encompass everything.
@balloob @zak everyone take them back to the retailer for refund!! Only way we're gonna make them listen.
@tinmouth the online store you bought it from has been phoenixed several times by now.
@balloob I have a Wemo switched outlet because a sister in law gifted one to my wife. I hated that it could only be controlled via a proprietary app, but found a third party PC program and then hit a home assistant. I wonder if either of these unofficial control methods will break too.
@balloob
It's like they wanted to prove you right.
@balloob there should be a collection of failed IoT clouds on Home Assistants website.
@balloob When we renovated our house eight years ago, our electrician was incredulous when we told him we didn't want "smart" anything. Even locally controlled, too many things can break compared to just wires and switches (and the occasional relay and some IR motion sensors). And software breakage isn't typically something you can fix quickly and reliably, not to mention relying on someone else's online services.

@balloob @iFixit
They should’n’t call them

cloud, connected, IoT or smart home devices

but

e-waste within a year to two.

Would they sell them?

@balloob I just finished replacing all of my Belkin Wemo stuff (mostly plugs) with more modern Zigbee plugs that work better with Home Assistant, so looks like I dodged that one.
@balloob where is thst law that force companies to make things open source. When products reach this point ?
@balloob You don't really own it unless your can compile, build, and deploy it on your home server.
@balloob why do they even bother building in update capability when they know they're going to pull this crap. Sigh.

@balloob

The L in IOT is for long term support.

@balloob I'm doing my part.
