To USAns everywhere: happy July 4th! Or as we call it here in the UK, Thanksgiving day!

@cstross

Yes. Today is the day shops finally stop selling hot cross buns and start selling Christmas cards instead.

@cstross

It's our celebration of Brexit.

@cstross
Having worked in Europe for US based companies for over a decade, I learned to appreciate US bank holidays. I wish they had more of them.
@iamlayer8 What, 11 a year is not enough for you? (Most states observe one or two more, but multinational employers don't.)

@cstross

Not too late to give it back is it? I know it's past warranty but there's a lot of smoke coming out of the engine now.

@Phosphenes
Of course the shop is on fire as well, so who knows what they can do...
@cstross
@cstross I used to tell Americans that we call today Colonial Rebellion Day, and that it's a national day of mourning in my country. I'm not making that joke any more.
@bodhipaksa
The most celebrated national holiday on earth, observed in over 60 countries, on average celebrated more than once per week, is independence from Britain. #justsaying 😉
@cstross

@SvenGeier @cstross

I'm not anti-US Independence at all 🙂 When I read the history of that era I'm solidly on the side of the colonists. I just think it's funny to give Americans the idea that we're upset about them becoming independent.

I hope that one day my native Scotland will have its own independence day celebrations. When I move back there I'll be dedicating whatever years I have left to that cause.

@cstross Honestly, I wish we were back under UK rule. For all the issues currently in the UK, they don't hold up to our issues here in the US.
@cstross An expatriate British friend of mine living in NYC used to call it "Ingratitude Day".
@wendyg @cstross if I recall correctly, the tiny island of Anguilla actually had a revolt (in the late 20th century) to PREVENT the British from leaving. I think that’s somewhat unique in colonial history.
@cstross
It's so tidy that they had a republic for an exact number of years.

@petealexharris @cstross it's a bit overflow problem,

the original programmers only conceived of a limited architecture so the closer we get to 256, the glitchier it gets.

@cstross thanks, but no thanks. I know you offer in the spirit of good will, but there is no independence anymore. And it's about goddamn time!

A country that forced my relatives to leave their homes, beat traditional culture out of them. My people did not have any religious freedom in the so called land of the free until 1978! My Grandpa Leva Gamble, and his brother Clarence were Shawnee men who served in WW2. Their service was wasted on these ingrates, these greedy scum. #LandBack

@cstross I used to call it “Ungrateful Colonial Commoner Day” when I lived in NYC. Then I became a USAn myself. And still call it that.
@cstross
Do I have to call this number again?
@SvenGeier @cstross Do they also take calls from Scotland?
