Medgar Evers would have turned 100 this week, & it got me thinking about his killer. He got away w/ murder, two trials w/ hung (all-white) juries in '64. Then in '75 he was found guilty of conspiracy to murder, this time a Jew.
But it was the new trial in '94 (appeals court said it could go forward, despite 30 years passing) that finally convicted him. His last years, age 71 to 80, were spent in prison.

This is the story that got me curious. They're celebrating his life this week. In the article, one of the last people to see Evers alive describes their final moments together, discussing the dangers of civil rights activism (meaning the violent fascist white supremacists, exactly the kind who are now killing politicians & driving cars into peaceful protesters).
