If you are using undocumented immigrants' tax records to find and kidnap them, then it was never about them paying taxes.

If you are showing up at their place of employment, then it was never about them not working.

If you are showing up at courthouses, then it was never about getting them to "do it the right way".

If you are kidnapping women and children, then it was never about criminals.

If you're refusing to give them due process, then it was never about the Constitution.

If you are building concentration camps in Florida to keep them here in cages, then it was never about the border.

If you're spending billions to do this, then it was never about the economy.

And if you're doing all this in the name of a 34 time convicted felon, then it was never about following the law.

@Lana Eloquently and concisely put. Thank you.
@Lana trump is putin's puppet. All of his actions are aimed at crippling russia's adversary, nothing else. There's no pretense of governing.
@Lana I don't know why everyone still doesn't see how trump is working for putin. It's totally blatant. https://mstdn.social/@GottaLaff/114784767706811496

Don't let this get by you. Via Olga Nesterova: #Trump lifted sanctions on several Russian companies and banks, incl Rosoboronexport — #Russia’s state arms trader and sole authorized exporter of military and dual-use goods. The move followed his July 1 decision to lift restrictions on Syria. That’s it. That’s truly it. I have no more questions

@Lana I still find it funny that you can be an "undocumented immigrant" and have a "tax record". Is a tax record not a document?
Anyway... you are completely right, it's not about taxes, not about them not working, not about doing it the right way, not about criminals, not about the Constitution, not about the border and not about the economy (at least not in that way). It's not even about deporting as many as possible.
The bigger question is, what is it then about?
@ausm @Lana Using racism to normalise extralegal punishment, thereby paving the way for detaining or banishing to a foreign gulag anyone who opposes the regime.
@ApostateEnglishman Agree, but I think this doesn't go far enough. It is about creating a new class of people. Trump wants to get production back in the US. For that you need people that produce things and this at the price and conditions producers dictate. Someone that can be deported/imprisoned/killed if he/she speaks up or demand any rights.
They want to have their slaves back. Clean coal... I mean, clean slaves.
Or in short, it's not about having fewer migrants. It's about those migrants having fewer rights.
@ausm hubby has been saying the same thing for years. Tax records *are* (or should be) documents.
@Lana What happend to "No taxation without representation"? ...
@ausm @Lana What's it about? Trump wants to deport people with brown skin, but invites white South African immigrants. That's a clear sign what it's about.
@ausm @Lana It occurs to me that your question was likely rhetorical. Still, I don't think the point can be overstated.

@ausm @Lana I think an "undocumented immigrant" with a "tax record" is someone who overstayed a work visa.

Not saying this to undermine the point being made here, just FYI

@Lana I mean if ur going after their tax records, I think it's safe to say they're documented at that point

anti-foreigner bias sucks \:

@Lana
I side-eye point #4. It would be better to leave out the gendered language and say that if they're kidnapping people with clean records, then it was never about criminals.

@pteryx @Lana yeah not the best choice of words to equate women as opposite to criminals lol

Hope OP considers an edit because otherwise that is a very strong text.

@renardboy @Lana
It's basically longstanding cultural cruft to use the phrase "women and children" to mean "innocents" and imply that both need special protection from danger while men are expendable. Chances are that she used the turn of phrase without even thinking.

@pteryx @Lana I certainly don't presume harmful intent on OP's part. And it's a fact that the overwhelming majority of violent criminals are men, no less now than historically.

Still, as a man who is not a criminal but was going to let this slide for reasons I'm sure you understand, I thank you for bringing it up.

@renardboy @pteryx @Lana I understood it as referring to the rhetoric the Republicans use to justify their actions, that patriarchal churchy “dedication” they have to protecting the women and children (while harming actual women and children).

@Lana hot damn .... That's so on point. Chisel that into every pillar in front of the White House, scream it over FoxNews permanently.

Thank you.

@Lana this is an excellent post!

@Lana @interfluidity I love ❤️ this

Too bad it’s too much to put on a T-shirt

@dpp @Lana @interfluidity put it on a long red necktie then
@dpp @Lana @interfluidity If it is more than three words long, the plebes aren't interested.
@Lana Game, set and match.

@Lana

From the Declaration of Independence

He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.

👀❤️THANK YOU, @Lana for your brilliantly worded post!

For anyone who would like to share this outside of Mastodon, this screenshot showed up in my Facebook feed (which is what brought me here).

This screenshot is for sharing on corporate social media, but the text is rather small for old eyes (like mine👵), so please be sure to use #AltText there, for anyone who uses the image.

@Lana Holy shit, that is incredibly put.
@Lana this is going viral over on bluesky too, is where i found you!
@Lana @slowenough I don’t follow a lot of people. But this post by itself is a reason to follow you! Well written and spot on.

I saw a screenshot of this post on Facebook. I made sure to link to the original in the comments. I don't know why people don't do that by default.
