Supreme Court Rules Some Americans Have a Constitutional Right to Insist on Theocracy

Alito had to contort the meaning of canonical Supreme Court doctrine so that he could either ignore established precedent or turn it on its head.

Why do we live in the world’s worst timeline?

This shit is crazier than hitchhikers guide the galaxy

@GhostOnTheHalfShell @heidilifeldman @mattblaze 🀷What did you expect that the conservatives will take their (temporary) loss in the War of Northern Aggression without response?

All tasteless joking aside, what you are seeing is a full steam ahead β€œback to the past” (actually a fantasy 19th century) conservative counter-revolution by a relative young (by SCOTUS standards) GOP loyalist majority on the court.

And so expect decades of repressions.

@heidilifeldman @mattblaze
It seems like there are at least two strategies to fight back:
1. Object that multiplication tables violate your religion. Force the courts to accept that nonsense, or directly admit they are favoring one group.

2. Just make blanket disclosures. "Every day this month we will be discussing families in school, some of which may include same-sex relationships. These discussions will happen throughout the day. The opt-out area is in the gym, where the janitor will supervise quiet reading." Repeat next month.

Are either of those not-stupid?

@heidilifeldman There was apparently a student in my tenth-grade biology class who belonged to a Christian sect that truly and sincerely believed that men have one less rib than women, because Eve was made from Adam's rib. The teacher went into this long laborious explanation in which he noted that the father of another student was a combat veteran who had lost a leg, but that the student herself had two legs, because, see, acquired traits are not inherited, and the same goes for Adam and the rib, so it's ok to believe that men and women have the same number of ribs and still believe that God took one of Adam's to make Eve out of. Post-Mahmoud, I gather that any biology teacher who's going to say that men have 12 ribs needs to provide advance notice so parents who believe otherwise can protect their precious babies from hearing such blasphemy.
@jonberger @heidilifeldman All of evolution teaching is in the danger zone. Expect a new monkey trial, with an unhappy outcome. Ah well, American science is screwed anyway.
@martinvermeer @heidilifeldman It will probably go a lot further than evolution, although that will certainly be a line of attack. When I was in elementary school, we sometimes had worksheets that showed pictures of various kinds of food and asked us to identify whether they were for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. The "breakfast" pictures frequently featured bacon. I assume that any Jewish or Muslim parents will need to be given notice of this, since they might not want their kids exposed to the notion that some people eat pork.
@heidilifeldman Planning to launch lawsuits demanding the same exemptions & privileges when schools show people eating meat or not eating meat, using machines of any kind, working on the weekend (Friday, Saturday, or Sunday), having children in any way, receiving blood transfusions, using the word "God" in any capacity, or discussing insecticides, pest control, or using mouse traps, insect baits, or flypaper in any circumstances.

If us lefties weren't such happy peopke generally speaking we'd get off of our asses and get after these local stupidities. It had to get THIS BAD for us to start excerising out considerable strength. But once roused... bar the door, Katie.

@wcbdata @heidilifeldman This could possibly be weaponized against them if we were clever about it.

That's what The Satanic Temple does, and they absolutely excel at triggering Christians who thought they totally wanted religion in government spaces and services. They have chapters in most or all states πŸ€—

@wcbdata @heidilifeldman I’m about to have a whole bunch of sincerely held religious beliefs.
@heidilifeldman They’re β€œfree” to get the hell out.

Regrettably, the fact that establishment Democrats let Republicans stack the court with corrupt right wing religulous fascists, without implementing countermeasures like expanding the court while they had the chance, is pretty much one of their greatest in a long line of lapses.

Still uncertain about the US democracy recovering from all of this, even if it does survive.

@heidilifeldman Thank you for writing it, and for pointing out that the conservative #scotus majority has really taken off the mask, showing its anti-pluralistic anti-democratic agenda.

Trying to achieve epistemic lock-in by blocking exposure to outside ideas is the behavior of a
cult.

@heidilifeldman Well done! πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘ Obviously Sam Alito & his Confederalist Society accomplices were all too willing to ride along Mahmoud's & the other plaintiffs' mentored intolerant revisionist point of attack.

Interesting in this fundamentalist dispute about humanism, tolerance v. intolerance, although the case does not only involve Muslim but also (presumably) Christian plaintiffs:
"...
There’s a long history of gender nonconformity, queer love, and diverse gender expression in the Islamic world. In fact, for much of Islamic history, there was a great deal of tolerance for diverse expressions of gender and homoeroticism.

Contrary to Claims of Anti-Trans Muslims, LGBTQ+ Acceptance is Widespread in the History of Islam

In recent weeks, school boards across the country have become sites of conflict as organized anti-trans and anti-gay protests allied with calls for book bans to target actual and perceived LGBTQ+ content in education. @heidilifeldman This is such a headache for schools that what they'll end up doing is sending home a syllabus of what's going to be taught & when. Then if parents want to opt their child out that day - fine no education for that kid, that day.

What will be tricky is how to write tests & assignments that can't assume a student has done any given part of the reading.

@heidilifeldman I've never heard of children becoming gay because they saw it in a book. It illuminates a complete lack of understanding of human sexuality. Their children will grow up seriously maladjusted.
