Out for a short 10-mile walk in temperatures somewhat higher than 100F/38C. Not 40C, so it's not really hot yet 😉.

I did my first walk with a harness umbrella holder and WOW did it make a difference! I've got a hiking umbrella (reflective silver on top and black on the bottom), but it's a bother to always carry it. The holder just takes care of that. Walking in permanent shade really helps.

#hiking

@ericphelps

Not recommended for bushwhacking😄

@donray Yes, I had to take it off when I got in the brush. And I don't really need it when I'm in the woods surrounded by shady trees. But when I'm on the paved trails connecting my house to the woodlands? Oh, yah!
@ericphelps 👀 wonder if that can double as holder for a GoPro on a stick for mapillary/street view kind of work
@ericphelps good workout! I did a run today in ~80°F, the hottest of the season so far, and it was pretty hard. But I mostly blame my electrolyte concoction which I took instead of my usual water, which proved to be overly sweet and nauseating, so I couldn't really drink as much as I needed. But lesson learned.

@isagalaev You know I do a custom electrolyte mix. I evangelize about it now and then.

But I run about 15% humidity during the summer here. So my 100F is more like everyone else's 80. When I hear people complaining about 80F (or 30C), I know they're facing a much higher humidity than mine.

@ericphelps I'm in PNW, so yeah, quite humid :-)

What's your custom mix?

@isagalaev I mix 3 parts table salt to one part potassium citrate. You can buy bags of the potassium on Amazon. I ignore the other minerals. Just take an extra cal/mag/zinc pill after your run.

I do ~1.5cc of the mix per 750ml of water. If it tastes salty, you added too much! I also add a 12oz (~350ml) carbonated drink to my 3L bag for two reasons:
1 - A little taste.
2 - The acid in the drink counters the base in the potassium citrate.

I carry a small ziploc bag of the salt mix for refills.

@ericphelps Hmmm. This is how Mona chose to display your photos to me.
@mlanger Okay, that's funny! I recall Tusky used to let me define the focus of the picture so trimmed versions would still show the important part. But I've gotten lazy. I don't know, it's kind of worth it for chuckles like that!
@ericphelps I notice you've also entered the "browning" stage of the year when grasses go from green to gold.

@CA_Hawthorne Yes, the closer I stay to the little creeks, the more likely I am to see green. Out in the open field though… all golden.

And stickers. So many stickers!

Some of those pretty spring flowers make some really nasty poky stickers. Honestly, that's mostly what my snake guards are for. Without them, I don't think I could untie my shoes after a hike!
