I broke away from my Book-4 read-thru yesterday (briefly) when inspiration struck me. Not another story, but new notes to aid me when I work on Book-7.

When I draft, I draft, but when I edit, I’ll indulge inspiration if it aids other projects. It also provides a break and adds a little variety to my time.

Drafting is intense, but with other aspects of writing I’m deliberate.

Good day!

For me, if they cut down a tree in the valley, I suffer grief.

In the mountains, when it’s natural and not a corporate attack, deadwood is a part of the natural cycle, and has a way of becoming art.

An end where our art lives on. I like that.

Wealth is one means to power, which is intended to assuage the classic masculine imbalance (too much, not enough).

Wealth creates the capitalist hierarchy, but other ladders exist. Bloodline. Persuasiveness. Religion. Those are a few. Possessing more than one aids ambitions.

On Ontyre, also include magic, not just its intensity, but also knowledge of its depths. Like above, you can combine it with other ladders.

In Book-4, and in a word, “transformation.”

The 4th book of the Kovenlore series, the middle book, is dominated by transformation, characters whose lives are profoundly changed for various reasons.

Meaning, they’ll never be the same again.

All the changes differ, but each is considerable. I could argue that the landscape changes, too, as does the social order. It’s that moment when what you cling to crumbles.

“read,” past or present?

In isolation, just the word?

Present, always present. Does that mean something? Maybe.

My initial inclination was to go down the rabbit hole of context, but I pulled back to examine the word. Read. Open a book. Experience the words, the story.

I’m a doer, so maybe this flows from that mindset. I’m also alone, so conversing with others about what I’ve read doesn’t occur.

Instead, I do, I read.

Thanks to my rotational system, it’s been six months since I performed the targeted edit on Book-4. Now, reading through it, it’s a stirring experience for me.

Yes, I love the story, but it’s more than that.

It’s witnessing the result of all my efforts, noting all the problem areas that used to exist. It’s that moment when I say, “Yes, this is it, this is what I wanted.”

Good day!

I found this little tree on an abandoned forest road and it brought me to a halt.

I’ve seen isolated pines, plenty of them. But this one stopped me.

Maybe because it was trying so hard, or because I saw some of my loneliness in it.

faith

Faith applies to many beliefs, religious and otherwise, and there are those who’d use if for devious reasons.

It took time for me to realize that it’s strongest in Riparia, even if she doesn’t realize it, largely because she fears people having faith in her.

It has less to do with religion and more to do with virtues and seeking faith in herself, with recognizing the needed balance she’s so long lacked.

perfection or “good enough”

It’s neither.

I’m no mathematician, but I understand that a line can approach zero on a graph, but never reach it. Chasing perfection is a fool’s errand, but I also don’t settle for good enough.

Even 95% is a long way from perfection.

I rely on the trained inner voice that determines the story is complete and ready to provide a rewarding reader experience for the right audience.
