Sometimes people try to convince me that tea is a reasonable substitute for coffee in the morning, an assertion with which I vigorously disagree. I have an analogy relating to coffee vs. tea, but though I don't want to jerk you around on this I really can't relate it here since it's NSFW, so you'll just have to figure it out for yourself, if you wish.
@lauren Forgot that there was a scoop of beans in grinder and had a double shot. Tea has about 1/2 the amount of caffeine as pressed coffee.
@stevewfolds @lauren Not if you drink Yerba Mate

One summer I made NOLA coffee with Chicory in a percolator. The diarrhea was hardly noticeable, drinking stream water gave me Giardia.

@lauren

I agree. The only reasonable alternative for coffee in the morning is proper tea (in the British style). Strong, with milk (without milk, the tannins are deeply unpleasant). Preferably made with a decent brand. Anything else people call tea (earl grey, herbal etc) is delightful but not for before noon.

Context- British tea drinker with a moderate obsession for properly made coffee. We travel with our own teabags.

@tempusfelix @lauren The people who suggest tea as a coffee substitute are doing you a favor. They're letting you know their advice is completely unreliable.

At the risk of insulting @lauren , as he's American and has lived all his life in LA, we must enquire as to how he makes "tea" and what type of "tea" he's vigorously disagreeing with.

PS: Loose tea is better than tea bags.

@PeterLudemann @tempusfelix I have sampled many teas over many years, including (many years ago) while passing through the UK. I have never found any that struck me as anything other than "slightly stronger than water". Not usually distasteful, just not very useful (except perhaps occasionally when ill). Note that I am NOT a coffee gourmet. I just make inexpensive ground coffee in a typical inexpensive drip machine. I've never actually been able to tell much difference, even when on the Google campus where -- at those times at least -- a range of coffee choices were available that I sampled.

@lauren @tempusfelix
You didn't say whether you drink your coffee with or without sugar and cream. If you want something definitely stronger than water, I suggest properly made Hong Kong style milk tea. If you like your coffee black, you might find an "Irish Breakfast" blend that meets your criteria.

Make mornings easier with a rich, hearty cup of tea. Whether you need to get up early for work or school or you just need a boost to get your day started, we have the perfect brew for you.

@PeterLudemann @tempusfelix I am inconsistent in terms of taking my coffee black or with sugar and/or cream. Depends on how I feel at any given moment.

@lauren @tempusfelix

FWIW, one way I can tell that I'm coming down with a cold is that I start to dislike coffee and have an urge to drink tea. Maybe it's the theanine in tea, but I feel the caffeine in coffee much more than the caffeine In tea (similar amounts of caffeine).

If you really want a hit of caffeine (and various antioxidents), try "koicha" (thick matcha). https://ippodotea.com/blogs/ippodo-tea-blog/koicha-for-a-next-level-matcha-experience
(but this requires higher grade matcha than is generally available in the US)

@PeterLudemann @tempusfelix Like I noted, I do sometimes drink tea when I'm ill. I'm not into coffee necessarily mainly for the caffeine. I'm not hard core about it.

This discussion is a bit like "do you prefer white wine or red wine?" and failing to state whether your white wine is two-buck-chuck Sauvignon Blanc or Chateau d'Yquem.

@lauren

I had to give up coffee for a bit and tried tea.

Fuck that. Never giving up coffee again.
