[gift article - NYTimes] Peter G. Neumann, Who Warned of Computer Security Risks, Dies at 93

I've said this here before and I'll say it again. I find public celebrations of anyone's illness or death disgusting. No matter how terrible you consider a person to be -- and how terrible they actually are -- they are human beings, often with innocent family and other relatives. It's perfectly appropriate to say that the world is now a better place without them and similar proclamations focused on their actions and behaviors, but sinking down to their level only brings disgrace to you, not to them.

The obscenity of the White House Correspondents' Dinners

Putting aside the dramatic events of the recent WHCD, I am struck by the imagery of MAGA figures and mostly left-leaning press all dressed up in tuxedos and fancy gowns for a "chummy" gala while millions of Americans can't afford food, or health care, or housing, or gasoline, or electricity, or other essentials.

It is, frankly obscene and disgusting.

@faraiwe When you blame the nontechie user, you are always on the wrong side of the argument. Blaming the user has been the go-to principle for Big Tech since the beginning, causing immense harm to innocent people mostly forced to use this tech that they don't really understand as other support and communications options have been withdrawn. They are not to blame. Big Tech and their billionaire CEOs are to blame, and techies overall have been the most obnoxious -- note the term LUSER they so often love -- of any group I've known in my own long technical career in this respect.
James Burke's "Connections" (1979 in the U.S.) is undoubtedly one of the finest educational series ever produced for television, only slightly diminished by his wearing of a (then fashionable) white leisure suit throughout.

"We are not recommending that people who don't drink coffee start drinking" Sounds like the lead author doesn't want their coffee to get more expensive due to a spike in demand. Anyway, I could go for another cup.

Long and interesting NYT story (gift link) about what has and hasn't changed with Marjorie Taylor Greene

Proposition: It's insane to spend $1000 on a phone. Really, it's nuts to spend more than $300 for a phone.
