@pluralistic Cory, absolutely loved Picks & Shovels. Looking forward to even more Martin Hench in the future.

Not relevant to P&S, but gives me strong vibes of both Eastern Standard Tribe and Walkaway universes: have you ever looked into _Meshtastic_ LoRa networking? (off-grid, low power, open source, mesh text comms)

Meshtastic looks like something that would appear on a Cory Doctorow Venn diagram…

@djoll Thanks! Will check out.
@pluralistic @djoll can confirm LoRa radios and meshtastic is very cool, definitely your thing if you haven't looked at it before

I once saw those devices transmit data at passable speeds from over 150km away on a free-to-use radio band, very nice stuff

@froge @pluralistic @djoll I especially like the Reticulum approach, with encryption built right into the routing, and its ability to operate on top of LoRa, normal internet, and whatever other networking base layer may be available.

Haven't actually played with it yet, though.

@froge @pluralistic @djoll the date rate is straight out of 1979 though.
@sleepy well it depends on the operating mode, and distance etc, but it usually works well for simple stuff, that's why I said "passable" haha

@froge

Hooked up my node in southern Sweden and directly connected with a bunch of nodes from Denmark. Sure the land is pretty flat here but still a pleasant surprise.

@pluralistic @djoll

@troed @froge @pluralistic @djoll now imagine what would be possible if we had less restrictive rules for fully autonomous UAVs...

A small fixed wing glider style UAV circling autonomously for hours, being a line-of-sight node for thousands of spread out devices, possibly even talking to other airborne nodes to extend the range :D

@wall_e I investigated doing this with commodity party balloons and helium... turns out that makes the government VERY angry in most nations haha
@froge @wall_e So it was you that flew all those mystery balloons over the US last year!!

@troed @froge @pluralistic @djoll

Cue open source Community Mesh propaganda...

@Phosphenes @troed @froge @pluralistic @djoll looking at this image makes me think how far we've strayed from the original goals of the internet. It wasn't intended to be this way, and the mesh picture better represents the early internet than the current internet picture does. It's a shame, but I suppose that's the fruit of capitalism
