Check out this video from about 1:15 on, as a brass band play the leftist anthem "Bella Ciao" to drown out #ProudBoy neo-Nazis who showed up at a #NoKings rally in Atlanta yesterday. Not only is it incredibly heartening, but the band SLAPS.

ETA: A Tumblr user identified the band, "The Black Sheep Ensemble":

We should all carry a tuba from now on, you know, for emergencies

It's worth noting that a bagpipe chanter and the humble recorder are fingered the same. Learn to play bagpipes and truly frighten away the fascist pigs.

@paraplegic_racehorse @Moosjazz @pluralistic Wut? I play recorder. It's a full 2 octave chromatic instrument, plus maybe one or two more notes on the high end if you're daring. That's around 25 notes. Highland pipes are diatonic instruments with an octave and a ninth range. You get 10 notes, that's it. Medieval bagpipes and most other folk bagpipes are also diatonic 1-octave instruments. So no, bagpipe fingering is way simpler than recorders.

@lemgandi @paraplegic_racehorse @Moosjazz @pluralistic Great Highland Bagpipe player here. Closing the holes may be similar, or at least once you figure out which fingers are up and down for each note, it’s straightforward.

But I would challenge any recorder player to master mistake-free bagpipe embellishments at tempo, in all idioms. That means the fingers that need to be up are up, and the fingers that need to be down are down, and there are never any “ghost” notes, or “crossing noises.”

The National Piping Centre in Glasgow has a free tutorial series demonstrating the 56 embellishment techniques in their beginner tutor book. Beginner, mind you. https://www.thepipingcentre.co.uk/learn/one-to-one/complete-highland-tutor-book-video-exercises

Put those all together, in a set of 120 bpm strathspeys. From memory. While blowing and squeezing the sheepskin bag that feeds air to the 4 cane reeds.

But, what do I know.

@lemgandi @paraplegic_racehorse @Moosjazz @pluralistic And did I mention, a single Great Highland Bagpipe tops out at about 110 decibels? Definitely protest-worthy.
@graymattergrcltd @lemgandi @paraplegic_racehorse @Moosjazz @pluralistic Many years ago I saw a video of a bagpiper (IIRC in full kilt garb) following a racist streat preacher, drowning their ranting out. The sight of this irritated nazi trying to shout over the pipes, trying to get away, with the piper scurrying after then while still piping away, was hilarious!
