boston to glasgow travel thread start
why did we decide we would allow people to charge their electronics in airports but only if they’re willing to sit in an uncomfortable stool with no backrest. is it punishment for being too online
they’re trying to scan faces as boarding passes now :|
landed EDI
why am i the only person on this bus to city center. have i made a terrible mistake
(gonna scotrail to glasgow eventually but need some kind of breakfast first)
ok there’s more people now. this bus company is very orange and the bus company employee is VERY excited about orange. the card i paid with was orange
i had a porridge that in retrospect was a peanut butter jelly sandwich in porridge form
now 🚆
is that the closest train emoji for scotrail?
“this train is for helensburgh central” ok sorry but i’m borrowing it
observations from the bus and train
jet lag 👎🏻
first mission of the morning is to obtain a US to UK travel power adapter because that failed to make it onto my packing list. argos was out of stock and the pound shop had EU but not US. currently running a promising background process (a kind volunteer at the conference registration desk checking for one at their nearby apartment)
also if i look at you but don’t say hello at TYPES it’s not intentional, i am just really bad at recognizing people i don’t see regularly. please say hello!
(going through the words in their talk title) “then, i’m going to define ‘all’,”
German guy complains that a paper is written in German
who called it a bi-Heyting algebra and not biphobic
at what point does one’s occipital lobe reach a lifetime quota of processing information via Beamer slides? i think i may have already exceeded mine
i finally made it to the start of a morning session 🥱
“my modalities will just be box and diamond… the OGs”
wow the sun sets at 10pm here
I forgot about natalie dee’s comics. they’re good
things i forgot as casualties to getting to the conference on time:
- my name tag
- breakfast
omg i just realized the current speaker is NOT fred. that would explain why he was at the hotel and also did not recognize me
(noticing they’re running out of time) “i think i’ll skip the intuition”
i am very sleepy but doing my best to stay awake for the @zanzi show!
the glasgow subway is so cute. it’s bb8 in train form
locals explained “we only have a circle line” and i replied that boston has everything *except* a circle line
we love a rainy night street photo
ramshorn: ram’s horn? ram shorn?
borb mural
feral flora
more glasgow weed patches
there’s a queue for the coffee machine at the hotel and my american brain can’t help but go you know what would solve this….
I THOUGHT I knew what a scone was but this was labeled “potato scone”
“what’s on the glasgow salad?”
“it’s just chips” lmao eat your heart out pittsburgh
cullen skink > boston clam chowder
sorry what

surprised no one has commented on “app only” yet
anyway i’m in edinburgh now.
conversation with my mother
wow they really just made the country's motto "don't fuck with me" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nemo_me_impune_lacessit

I went to the castle and it was alright. ate cake in the tea room. got stuck in tourist hell for a little longer than is good for the soul. came back down and saw that “cinema in the park” was playing Twisters, which i stayed to watch to the end
i appreciate that what we stateside rubes might call “mixed berries” is here known as “fruit of the forest”. probably not much more botanically accurate but much more evocative of being at a feast in a Redwall novel
love to see it
tripped and fell into phil wadler’s retirement party
ok
golden hour last couple of days
(i’m trying to get better at photo composition! if any of you who know what you’re doing behind a camera have suggestions or constructive critiques i’d be happy to hear it, with the caveat that “the camera i have with me” is probably going to be an outdated one-lens iphone for the foreseeable future)
I understand things like focal points/rule of thirds and perspective lines from my drawing/collage/mixed media experience, and I’ve read enough photo 101 to know about depth of field and looking for tangent lines and shadows and reflections and stuff. i’m a lot less confident about choosing angles, places to stand, and how to crop to balance fore/mid/background elements, stuff like that
last day here, finally drinking a scotch (bowmore 15)
the thing is i *like* scotch, but i don’t like tourist traps, and unfortunately i’m in a very touristy area. so i had to convince myself that it was really ok to go to some random pub on the royal mile and order a possibly-overpriced scotch. it’s really delicious, no one is currently being rowdy nearby, and I have no regrets
i’m probably misusing the word pub. tavern? restaurant? it has full meal food as well. does that disqualify it from pub status?
i had an exciting moment today spotting a ground nesting bird on a hilltop in holyrood park, which I assumed was a skylark based on the sign (pictured), but reading their Wikipedia page (we don’t have them in the US) i think this bird was larger. all i have is two bad photos with unfortunate lighting (I was trying to keep my distance per signage) but would be curious if anyone can identify!
@chrisamaphone Absolutely not, "pub grub" is totally a thing

@chrisamaphone back when I worked on building an ontology of business types for the megacorp, we considered pubs to usually require serving food.

But also the whole process was cursed and we would have known that if we'd hired a philosopher instead of software engineers.

Bevor Sie zu Google Maps weitergehen

@chrisamaphone you need to be a member for the actual SMWS but the bar downstairs has the same stuff with no membership requirement. their buyers are really superb
@regehr okay well that’s a block from my hotel so noted 🫡
@chrisamaphone Sorry I had to hide for the back end of TYPES. You don't have to drink all that much whisky for the difference between Edinburgh and Glasgow prices to pay for the train.
@chrisamaphone Laphroaig?
@shapr no it’s Bowmore, another Islay distillery
@chrisamaphone i wanna take some kind of photography class or something because i'm often struck by breathtaking landscapes and then if i take a picture it looks incrediibly flat
@shoofle i have a physical copy of a book about digital phone-camera photography i can lend you if you like! one of the best tips i learned for making photos feel less flat is to vary the depths of what’s visible in your shot, ie try to have something in the foreground, midground and background (any of these might be where your focal point lives). it kinda reminds me of blocking in stage performance
@chrisamaphone ooohh i really llke the angles in #2. and #1 and #4 really look like paintings in a really cool way
@chrisamaphone After staring at this for longer than I care to admit, I'm frustrated that I can't place it. But then I haven't lived in Edinburgh for nigh-on two decades.
@davidjamesweir St Andrew Square. same place the outdoor cinema was :)
@chrisamaphone oh! oh, good for him! (he taught me at undergrad)
@chrisamaphone should’ve covered the arrow instead
@chrisamaphone thinking about frutti di mare and now wondering [butterfly guy meme, but looking at “fruits”] is this a monad
@chrisamaphone at least they're all fruits - "mixed berries" usually only contains one berry (blue).
@chrisamaphone climbing the Scott Monument is worth the ransom
@chrisamaphone (or at least it was when I did it last ten years ago)
@chrisamaphone merely recognising reality
@chrisamaphone FWIW, lower case r republicans aren't exactly unheard of here - it's just that stories of what they get up to are rare compared to the rest of our political class, not that they don't pull any shit
@flippac @chrisamaphone I'd advise attention to the Glorious Revolution of 1688, which reset the status of King in the UK to "glamorous host".
@pigworker @chrisamaphone Mostly. Once in a while you find something that parliament did Because They Were Asked. Soft power is still power and all that.
@flippac @chrisamaphone Oh, sure. The 1911 Parliament Act was a major case in point. There have been many cases since then, usually subtle exemptions to the prohibition of cruelty, justified by the persistence of beauty.
@chrisamaphone i feel like you could find or start a no kings protest in edinburgh
@chrisamaphone i mean application is pretty much all you can do in a functional language right
@chrisamaphone these lattes are composable
@chrisamaphone with curry powder, probably
@arthegall well they did apparently mean turmeric or whatever
@chrisamaphone operational latte. denotational latte. syntactic latte
@chrisamaphone When you take a sip from it, I guess it creates a whole new large iced latte with the next amount of liquid.
@chrisamaphone But can you flatMap over the latte container – that's the real question!
@chrisamaphone `unsafePerformSlurp`
@chrisamaphone Coffee is a machine for turning mathematicians into theorems.
@chrisamaphone finally, after all those dysfunctional lattes
