boston to glasgow travel thread start
why did we decide we would allow people to charge their electronics in airports but only if they’re willing to sit in an uncomfortable stool with no backrest. is it punishment for being too online
they’re trying to scan faces as boarding passes now :|
landed EDI
why am i the only person on this bus to city center. have i made a terrible mistake
(gonna scotrail to glasgow eventually but need some kind of breakfast first)
ok there’s more people now. this bus company is very orange and the bus company employee is VERY excited about orange. the card i paid with was orange
i had a porridge that in retrospect was a peanut butter jelly sandwich in porridge form
now 🚆
is that the closest train emoji for scotrail?
“this train is for helensburgh central” ok sorry but i’m borrowing it
observations from the bus and train
jet lag 👎🏻
first mission of the morning is to obtain a US to UK travel power adapter because that failed to make it onto my packing list. argos was out of stock and the pound shop had EU but not US. currently running a promising background process (a kind volunteer at the conference registration desk checking for one at their nearby apartment)
also if i look at you but don’t say hello at TYPES it’s not intentional, i am just really bad at recognizing people i don’t see regularly. please say hello!
(going through the words in their talk title) “then, i’m going to define ‘all’,”
German guy complains that a paper is written in German
who called it a bi-Heyting algebra and not biphobic
at what point does one’s occipital lobe reach a lifetime quota of processing information via Beamer slides? i think i may have already exceeded mine
i finally made it to the start of a morning session 🥱
“my modalities will just be box and diamond… the OGs”
wow the sun sets at 10pm here
I forgot about natalie dee’s comics. they’re good
things i forgot as casualties to getting to the conference on time:
- my name tag
- breakfast
omg i just realized the current speaker is NOT fred. that would explain why he was at the hotel and also did not recognize me
(noticing they’re running out of time) “i think i’ll skip the intuition”
i am very sleepy but doing my best to stay awake for the @zanzi show!
@zanzi this isn’t worth me grabbing the mic, but shouldn’t it be sinister and *dexterous*, rather than dominant? dominance isn’t specific to which hand, it’s just whichever one is preferred by a given person
@zanzi also thank you for using one of my favorite words (chirality)
@chrisamaphone @zanzi Haha, I recently found an old note where I recorded my wife musing "Hmm, chicken wings have chirality."
@chrisamaphone oh! That's what I get for changing my nomenclature at the last minute 😆yes, it should be dextrous indeed. It has a better ring to it than 'dominant' too!

@chrisamaphone and thanks for coming to my talk :DD

I have unfortunately realized today at 8:55 am that the conference is not hybrid and that I can't watch your talk from bed... But I will def watch it once the recording is out!

@zanzi no worries! I think there was a secret zoom link but conor was the only one who appeared privy to the secret
the glasgow subway is so cute. it’s bb8 in train form
locals explained “we only have a circle line” and i replied that boston has everything *except* a circle line
we love a rainy night street photo
ramshorn: ram’s horn? ram shorn?
borb mural
feral flora
more glasgow weed patches
there’s a queue for the coffee machine at the hotel and my american brain can’t help but go you know what would solve this….
I THOUGHT I knew what a scone was but this was labeled “potato scone”
“what’s on the glasgow salad?”
“it’s just chips” lmao eat your heart out pittsburgh
cullen skink > boston clam chowder
@chrisamaphone what you know as salad is known as 'crappy salad' in the local dialect.
@chrisamaphone yeah, that's an irish thing with a weird name. tasty enough, but not what we think of as a scone
@chrisamaphone your american brain or your problem solving brain?
@dysfun i mean the answer is american drip coffee so both
@chrisamaphone i must admit i'm a drip coffee person. we prefer a longer, weaker drink in chateau dysfun anyway and we love the convenience.
@chrisamaphone @dysfun woooow I misinterpreted that and thought the answer was a market (“if we charged for coffee this line wouldn’t be so long!”)
@chrisamaphone my first thought was “super soaker full of cold brew?” so I guess that’s my fallback Expat Business
@chrisamaphone I don't think that thought is American. I had the same experience in Tallinn (20 breakfasters lined up at one slow machine) last year, and left the same solution in my review when I checked out.
@chrisamaphone sure looks like foxglove, which I think was imported to NZ for instance.
@chrisamaphone One of my favourite murals, depicting St Mungo (patron saint of Glasgow) and the robin tamed by St Serf who 'never flew'.
@davidjamesweir oh! thank you for filling in the story!

@chrisamaphone No problem!

(hope it wasn't excessive context for what is a nice mural, regardless of the story behind it)

@davidjamesweir not at all, i really like knowing about these things
@chrisamaphone this is a scene in disco elysium right
@jcreed omg he does look like that! apparently this is the patron saint of glasgow. wonder if he was inspiration to the devs
@chrisamaphone this is what algebraic geometry does to the mind!
@leah hmm. for me I think it’s the cryptic crossword puzzles. but perhaps this means i should do more algebraic geometry
@chrisamaphone (the pronunciation of Hartshorne)
@leah ahh got it thank you :)

@chrisamaphone *googles, not expecting the onslaught of adorable*

(Even the old ones are cute!)

@chrisamaphone The whole room rioting: "give us the intuition!"
@chrisamaphone that was an amazing talk and now I'm feeling excited about working with focusing again :)
@wen aw yay!! thank you!
@wen i’d love to know what you’re working on too
@chrisamaphone well I was thinking that Fred spontaneously duplicated himself on stage just now...
@chrisamaphone There should be pastries today with the coffee 🤞
@chrisamaphone Oops, I was wrong. Sorry about that
@gallais presumably not your fault!
